5 years and still not figured it out.

Hi!

I tell you first my story. I began my golfing career about 10 years ago. After first couple of years I made my hcp up to 10. Then I started to compete at the regional level in Finland (EU country). I play very decent play for the first 1 and half year while competing. I hit gentle draw and even though I was inconsistent I play quite good to my standards.

Then things got to fell apart and I didn't play that good anymore. So that's when I was starting to make swing changes. It has been 5 years now that I was making swing changes. I always had at least one swing thought when I practise or playing and didn't worry about the score I made. The only time I think about score is my club championship in August but after that I am changing the "swing change mode" again. I my swing has changed over the years but some core elements are still the same. And I am still very inconsistent especially with the driver and 3 wood. So I appreciate all your comments that comes up to your mind. I have a thick skin so feel free to participate!

Thanks for advance!

Hi Noob,

It seems to me there is a lot in the 3rd video to learn. You establish a nice wide base with your feet and your swing has an overall nice tempo. Its clear that on a good day when things sync up well you could play very well.

There are a couple of things which catch my eye.

1) Your grip is not settled and/or trusted almost up to the instant of takeaway.
2) At address there is very little angle from the arms down through the shaft - and you appear to be reaching for the ball.

I believe this is the root of your inconsistencies. Because you stand wide and reach for the ball a little - when combined with inconsistency in your grip, by the time your club reaches ground parallel and waist high - the shaft is no longer parallel to or pointing at the target. Instead, by that point the butt end of the handle is pointing out to the right of target. Then you recover pretty well by lifting the arms - however in doing so your shoulder turn is quite horizontal as opposed to being at 90 degrees to your spine.

If it were me, what I would consider is getting a confident grip, That would include getting the handle to lay closer to the base knuckles of the left hand as opposed to being angled along the life-line of the left palm. This would slightly increase the angle between the arms and the shaft at address. You may then need to inch a little closer to the ball at address as well. Then I would place a tee in the butt end of the handle and swing so that the tee points along the target line (extending through the ball to the target) whenever the club is completing the backswing and/or starting the downswing.

Once these things are happening, I suspect you will not be feeling like you have to let the club release early. You will probably find it easier to keep the club in front of the chest back and through a little more and let that bend in the back of the right wrist simply transport down to the ball and then release. This isn't "holding off" -- its just using your ability to swing around your spine a little more simply and trusting your improved grip to just "let" the wrists unhinge more naturally as you turn.

This would be my approach. I think I would use a mirror to rehearse. You would quickly see if the shoulders are turning perpendicular to your spine by stopping at the top and looking down the line. I hope I've spotted a thing or two which may be helpful. There are always more and better opinions here on WRX - many from accomplished pro instructors. Hopefully their ideas will be forthcoming as well.

Take care and best of luck to you!

Thank you Reasonability!

It's a great post and I totally agree with you a few comments you made. It feels indeed to me that I have a hurry in my downswing and that I had to release my club soon. I have never consider the views you suggested so I am glad that you brought it out! I am actually going to change my grip from vardon to interlock because it never felt right to me. I guess I have too large hands or too thin grip.. So it doesn't cost me nothing to consider the grip changes as well. Besides we have the whole cold winter ahead so I had enough time to make quite radical changes.

It's great to have an other pair of eyes watching the swing. I wouldn't have seen these things on my own so thank you again!

Too my eye you are slightly too wide in stance. A little flat in the swing. So many good other things you are doing correct though.

You are somehow losing it halfway down with your body coming up as if you are trying to lift the ball in the air/create loft of the club.

Let me view a few times more.

[/quote] Keep it simple. You need to transfer your weight from your right side to your left better somehow. Guys with better teaching knowledge than me will help you better than we though. If I were you I would concentrate on keeping that terrific top of swing lag you have later in the strike. Do not be afraid of lateral movement to help you transfer your weight better.

Just my eyes/gut feeling on your videos. Keep at it. You have something.
