Crazy streak of holing shots

Recommended Posts

Ever had a streak of holing an improbable amount of shots?
Years ago, between the ages of 16 and 18 when I was playing my competitive golf, I went through a period of holing approach shots. 4 of my 5 aces came during this time, I holed fairway woods, long irons, mid irons, really an amazingly improbable amount of approach shots. Granted I was playing a lot of golf at that time, but still.....

Most memorably I remember standing over a 150 yeard 7 iron at the 4 hole of my home course with the absolute conviction it was going in. It did.

Recently I had the opportunity of speaking with another low handicap middle-aged golfer who had experienced a similar phenomenon earlier in life.

How about you? Has something similar happened to you in your golfing career? Maybe you've got a streak going on right now? Maybe you have one starting tomorrow......

I was working at a course in New England when this guy Tommy Rawson (sp.) had two holes in one in the same round. Not to mention he was like 80 at the time. Crazy. I think that there is merit to it. Maybe you just get into the groove or you are more fluid, or maybe you just achieve dimensional purity???

A woman who lives near me has had quite a year:

Here is an excerpt from our newspaper....The Desert Sun:

Valley golfer barraged by praise, scorn

RANCHO MIRAGE - A hole in one can bring exhilaration to a round of golf. Fourteen holes in one in four months can actually make the game a little stressful, Jacqueline Gagne has discovered.

"I'm not a serious golfer, but I've had to become a serious golfer," said Gagne, the Rancho Mirage resident who gained international fame for scoring 14 aces between January and May. "I play for the fun, to go out and have a great time. But after all of these holes in one happened, you kind of have to get a little more serious about your game and play every shot."

Gagne's incredible run of aces, starting Jan. 23 and extending most recently to May 25, has caught the imagination of golfers and media from London to Australia. Having played for only 4 years, Gagne's claimed aces dwarf the numbers of even accomplished players and produced staggering odds of septillions to 1 against. By comparison, one ace in a single round of golf rates 5,000 to 1, according to Golf Digest.

But along with the praise and amazement of those who embrace the story have come the snorts and the outright scorn of those who can't believe Gagne's claim, even with witnesses and verification seemingly plentiful.

"She has the proof. She does have a whole bunch of people that are saying, 'I saw it,'" said Robert Barnes, director of golf at Mission Hills Country Club - the site of nine of Gagne's aces. "And we have nobody who is saying, 'Well, I was there and it didn't happen.'"

The demands of the sudden celebrity status that sparked dozens of television, radio, magazine and newspaper interviews as well as the barbs of the doubters and critics has been so difficult at times that Gagne admits to going underground for a while to avoid the spotlight.

"You get caught up in defending yourself, and I really got caught up in that," Gagne said. "Finally, I just said to myself, you know, it speaks for itself. I can't be chasing down all these fires."

Interest in Gagne has continued more than a month after her last claimed ace May 25, and the 46-year-old retired computer programmer is still enjoying parts of her fame. A delayed appearance on "The Late Show with David Letterman" may come at the end of July. The "Ellen" show may call back in September when new tapings begin.

4 years ago, I Holed out a 7 iron from 203 yds. for double eagle, a week later I lipped out from doing the same from 225 with a 5 iron (both shots downwind) - still made the putt for eagle. I was in a heck of a zone for about 2 weeks. Holed out two other times for eagle that same summer. Only think I've done it once since then (67 yd lob wedge last year). Never made a hole in one and I've been playing for over 20 years.

BTW, that Gagne lady that claims 14 Holes in one in something like a month is a complete fraud.

Two consecutive chip-ins by a beginner. My girlfriend who just started playing (well, she took a golf class and hit some range balls ~20 years ago in college) chipped in on the 8th and 9th holes yesterday. They weren't skulls that collided with the stick and dropped in. They were nice shots that flew to the putting surface, bounced a couple of times and went in, one for par and one for double. Earlier, she hit the pin with a chip and ran another over the lip.
