Hogan 1953 Commemorative Driver Repair

Recommended Posts

This is an update to a post I made recently about a set of Hogan 1953 Commemorative woods I recently purchased. The driver had been reshafted and after pulling of the whipping I discovered two hairline cracks. I attempted to get the screw out of the back to see if I could reshaft, but the head of the screw broke off. I do not want to reshaft and read someplace on this forum a thread about fixing cracks of this nature by drilling a hole in front of the end of the crack and epoxying it. I cleaned out the cracks and followed the cracks up as far as I could see and drilled the holes in hopefully solid wood. I was just about to start putting the epoxy on the club, actually already had it mixed up, when a voice told me to stop and ask the forum if they have any suggestions. Not sure at all if I am doing this correctly, but at this point the worst thing I will get out of it is the coolest desk pen holder a Hogan fan could ever want. Hoping that is not the case, but I don't have a ton invested in the set and really did not want to spend a fortune having someone else do it. I will chalk it up to a learning experience if I cannot save it. Was planning on using Gorilla Expoxy since that is what I have here at home already, but up for suggestions. I have read some threads where epoxy choice has caused some heated arguments so not looking for that. I am thinking I will fill up the cracks and also try to get an epoxy collar formed all the way up to the masking tape and then sand it down before whipping it up. Am I doomed to failure at this point or am I even on the right track?

Update...

Went ahead and put on the epoxy collar, it appears to have turned out well. I have also sanded it and done a test wrap with the whipping material and it looks decent. I will be touching it up with some paint fills and some clear poly before I do the final wrap, thought I would add some pictures on the epoxy collar.

Final Update....

Finally have her all sewn up and re-whipped. Took it out to the range for a session and it felt solid as a rock. Really like the way this block feels over the 1991 Redline Persimmons, at least from the driver side. New gamer has been found.

Unfortunate that the previous owner did such a poor job of reshafting the club in the first place. Not installing a ferule and improper tapering of the hosel, incorrect backscrew. Just bad workmanship.

Resetting the shaft would be the best scenario, but at this stage just try and get as much epoxy forced into the cracks as possible. Maybe heat the epoxy up a little with a heat gun or hair dryer to help it flow better. Good luck.

To get the shaft off with the screw broken you need to drill the shaft set screw in half. I can't remember if it is a bore through or not but you might need to find a long drill bit 7/32 I believe down the shaft then use a punch and punch the part of the screw into the then heat and remove the head. The epoxy the head to the shaft and the hosel crack repair will be stronger

Too bad someone turned the neck down

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
