Elbow tucking?

Can anyone shed some light on the elbow tuck on the way up and coming down? Should I feel like both of my armpits are tucked throughout the whole swing?

You do want to keep your right elbow (right-handed player) from flying outward, but not to overdo it either. At the top of the backswing, I don't like mine going beyond perpendicular to the club - think of how a waiter holds a tray. On the downswing, I like to bring my elbow into (or create the feeling of) and across my right pant pocket. If I let my right elbow swing outward, I usually come over the top and slice. What I mentioned above keeps me more inside.

There is no such thing as one swing, there are more than we can count. So all we can do is try to see what works and what doesn`t. If you were to set up to the ball and look down at your arms and draw lines up each arm to the shoulder and a line from shoulder to shoulder you would see a triangle created by these three lines. If you then swing back trying to keep that triangle in tact you will start to see the right arm starting to bend at the elbo and the left arm still maintaines its straight line. This take away just about guarantees the proper path going back and maintains the proper connection with the chest........Jim

it's pretty important on the downswing.. on the backswing it doesn't really matter.. daly, couples, nicklaus are all guys who bombed it and play pretty good golf with a right elbow that does what it feels like.. until they start down, and then it tucks like it should. that being said, it's probably a lot easier to be consistent if you don't let your elbow fly going back.

 

personally, I don't pay attention to it at all. I've played with manipulating it on the range, and I find that I hit the ball higher and farther if I let it fly.. and swing video shows that it does fly when I'm not thinking about it
