Major: General Studies...?

Just watching the Indiana-KEntucky hoops game, and already two Indiana players have shown up the the charity stripe with their majors listed as 'General Studies'. What the heck is that supposed to be? "Hey I can play pretty good ball, but studying isn't really my thing. Give me something easy."? Unless of course, he studies to become a general someday ;-)

general studies is just mainly for freshman and sophomores who havent decided what their major is going to be. So they just take all different types of classes until they decide, its not any easier or anything

Actually thats gen. eds. which are for freshman and sophomores, which are basic general required courses. At some schools they have "general studies" degrees.

that's IU's general studies degree.



1. You must successfully complete a minimum of 120 semester hours to graduate.
2. You must successfully complete at least 69 of the 120 required credit hours in the arts and sciences. You may earn no more than 21 of these 69 credit hours — including credits earned on the basis of a self-acquired competency (SAC) portfolio — in a single arts and sciences department or subject area. In addition, you may earn no more than 30 of the 51 credit hours allowed outside the arts and sciences — including credits earned on the basis of a SAC portfolio — in any one professional school or technical program.
3. You must successfully complete at least 30 of the 120 required credit hours at Indiana University or through the Indiana University Independent Study Program. You may not apply credits earned by self-acquired competency, Defense Activity for Nontraditional Education Support (DANTES), and College-Level Examination Programs (CLEP) to this 30 credit hour requirement.
4. You must complete at least 20 of the 30 semester hours of required credit after admission to the General Studies Degree Program. You may not apply credits you earned by self-acquired competency, Defense Activity for Nontraditional Education Support (DANTES), and College-Level Examination Programs (CLEP) to this 20 credit hour requirement.
5. You must successfully complete at least 30 of the 120 required credit hours at the 300 and 400 upper-division level.
6. You must earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on all courses considered for the B.G.S. and on all courses you complete after being admitted to the School of Continuing Studies. The minimum grade we accept for any course completed to satisfy course distribution requirements is C-.
7. You must also fulfill the fundamental skills (competency) requirements and B.G.S. course distribution requirements.
8. If you pursue the B.G.S. after completing the A.A. in General Studies, you must fulfill the B.G.S requirements that are in effect when we admit you to the bachelor's program.





Those are the requirements.

That means they have not actually been accepted into a formal degreed program there. They are basically just "taking classes". I knew some guys at UC that were athletes and as long as they passed it mattered not what they took. This guy basically took all the PE classes he could.....

at UNLV its called University Studies... Basically a major for athletes so they can take lower level classes in alot of different things.

I wasn't implying that all athletes are dumb, but I was surprised to see that to be the norm rather than the exception.
There were even more players with that major after I posted this message....;-)

At Texas, it was called "Undeclared Major" (I think that's right. It's been a while. )

Like everyone else has stated, it is for freshman and sophomores who dont know exactly what they want to study yet. Here at State we call it FYC (First Year College). You basically take general classes that will go towards any major so you do not get behing in hours and so you are not taking meaningless classes. It is very beneficial and you will see alot of athletes will take this there first year because they are so focused on their sport rather than there studies.

I think what Adam (as in CameronCircleT) pointed out is different from what a lot of you are thinking. Yes, some schools have a General Studies major which is not an undeclared major. It's essentially a major in the liberal arts. It's taking a lot of classes in a lot of different subjects, rather than focusing on one or two.

At FSU they call it "Exploratory..." i.e. "I don't know know what the f#@& I want to do yet."
