Ryder Cup Style Event (Club vs. Club)

Does anyone here help facilitate/play in a well established event like this? If so, I would like to hear a little about it. Do you have by-laws? rules in place? format info? etc? 2024 will be our 14th year of our event and we are always looking for new ideas on how to make it bigger/better.

Ive played in a couple, and both are similar in ways but unique in others.

 

One is two country clubs from nearby towns. The other is two municipal courses from the same greater area. Both have been going about 20-30 years. 

 

The private clubs' cup is only a two day event - best ball match play in the morning of Day 1, then same partners and pairings and Alternate Shot match play the afternoon of Day 1. Day 2 is singles matches and played at the opposite course from Day 1.

 

This one is a bit unique in that the qualifying procedure is that you have to win your flight in the Club Match Play championship - so theres a range of players from + to 20 on the team. The captians (each club pro) make pairings based on handicaps.....not the biggest fan of this format/qualification process for obvious reasons.

 

The muni courses' Cup is a three day affair. Qualifying is slightly different at each course, but the gist is you have 7-9 established qualifying days and you can play usually 6 rounds max and take your best 3 rounds for a 54 hole score. The best 12 54-hole totals make the team (one club allows it's club champion to auto-qualify for the cup).

 

The courses rotate which club hosts the first two days of the event each year (Day 1&2 at Club A and Day 3 at Club B). Day 1 is Alternate Shot Match Play, Day 2 is Best Ball Match Play and Day 3 is singles.  The pairings are done blind - this is something we've argued to change for a few years to go to a Presidents Cup style snake pairing.

 

Both cups have 12 points available to the teams matches and 12 points up for grabs on the singles' matches. Both have a set of bylaws in place for pairings procedures, captain selection, and certain provisions like players who belong to both clubs or have access to both clubs must declare only one club that they intend to qualify for.
