Help me choose a shaft for L4V head

Hi all

I've just purchased a L4V driver head and I'm looking for the right shaft to put into it. I see to live in a complete black hole when it comes to quality information relating to golf equipment so I'm hoping someone will be able to help me choose a decent fit on this board.

Head: L4V 12 Degrees

Swing speed is around 96-100ish with my bad shot a weak push fade that goes very high and short. Sometimes I seem to hit a good shot that feels correct and starts of straight, continues to go straight until the ball reaches its apex and then flairs off to the right. Good shots have a nice mid trajectory with plenty of roll when I have a club that fits me well but badly fitted clubs go very high and short (This seems to be all TaylorMade Drivers with stock stiff shaft).

I've listed the drivers I've hit well in the past below but due to my tendency to hit the weak push fade with them I've never been completely happy with any of the clubs and consistently change. In a perfect world I'm pretty much after an anti right driver, hence the 12 Degree version as this has the most closed face, but one which doesn't spin the ball too much as I don't want to hit high short drives. And from what I’ve read the L4V is pretty low spin without the stock shaft

The above only ever happens with a driver, I've had lessons with a few different pros one of which played on the European Tour with some success and my swing holds together. Yes there is room for improvement but I'm by no means a hacker and when everything comes together I play some decent stuff with my best round a 68 on a 72 course. Lately however I've been hitting my driver that badly my confidence in everything has just gone south and I look like shooting in the 90's not the 70's

Decent Past Drivers:

Ping 9 Degree NV65 Regular

Cleveland 8.5 Degree Hi-Bore Tour Platform 27.3 Stiff with a shed load of lead tape

Masker 11 Degree NV65 Regular

I seem to have found a fairway wood which fits me perfectly which is a Cobra 4+ with a Axiv 6564M shaft Tipped and Trimmed to length. Strangely I don't suffer from the weak fade shot with this club, yes if I put a bad swing on it I get a bad result but any halfway decent swing produces very acceptable results.

I’m thinking of a heavy shaft in regular something like a Harrison Mugen 80 or a Purple Ice 80 but anything thoughts and opinions will be greatly received.

Thanks Todd

I had an Adams BTY with the prolaunch red in stiff and when I hit it right it went for miles easily one of the longest drivers I've used so from that point of view I would be happy to try the red again. However I also purchased on of the Admin BUL 5000 tour drivers with a pro launch red again in stiff but this time I had shocking results with it and it only lasted one round before going on eBay. This shaft was trimmed to 44in but it just didn't feel the same as the BTY alot stiffer and I really don't like a shaft that feels to stiff at impact. Is the stock red in the BTY the same as the aftermarket shaft?

I think it is the same shaft. Most people including me feel that the PL red plays a little stiff, but the extra headwieght of the Cobra head should soften the feel, and make it play more like a firm flex. Like most people I have read the entire L4VX thread aswell as had an X head with a protopype. The most common theme in shafts is that it needs to be stout enough to control the extra head weight.Pl red, Protopype,Pm702 and the long list of telephone polls that others have used successfully all are pretty tip stiff, stable shafts. IMO Todd

I have NEVER liked the driver in fifty seasons of golf--it's all in my head--and at my home club, I hit mine (long, wide, and stupid, as I'm fond of saying) on a grand total of four wide open holes.

However, there has been one shaft that's gotten me out of a driver funk in recent times, and it's a real cheapo--the Harrison Star Plus. You'll see this baby on pre-fab component clubs in flea markets, perhaps, and maybe it's all in my head, but when I go on vacation and will play an unfamiliar, longer course that requires more driver tee shots that I'd prefer dealing with, I take a driver with one of these babies in it. It hits a little short and it balloons, but it puts so much spin on the ball that sidespin is very largely negated unless you hit an on-purpose banana. You'll hit the ball, get so-so distance, and find the ball to hit it again.

At my level (11 handicap), that's all I could ask from a driver.

On my gamer, I play a better (UST) shaft, but the Star Plus may be as idiot proof as you can go.

Thanks for the replies so far guys I'll add the pro launch red to my list but I'm thinking I'll pass on the Harrision star as a large amount of backspin will just render the driver worthless to me as I will out drive it with my 4 wood.

I could just use the 4 wood for the whole round but as with most people I want to be able to play a driver as eek out as many yards as possible while still remaining playable

There has been some great feedback given on the UST AXIVcore shafts. There is a Blue, Black, and Red version. You can get them in 69 and 79 gram versions. They are $140 for the black and red. You may want to look into the Black 79g stiff. It is supposed to high launch and low spin. The red is lower launch, low spin. The blue is a high spin option for slower swing speeds. I am thinking about the black personally for my 907D2.
