FLO planes and spines

trying to figure it out
Is there always supposed to be 2 flo planes? I have some that do and some that don't. and I found the NBP in between the flo planes...what do i do? just practicing on an old set before doing it to my new ones.

-found the flo plane(s) already
-found the spines/nbp
-wanting to put nbp towards target but its in between the FLO planes (only a couple)

SST says that after testing over 1 million shafts , they have found that no shaft has less than 2 planes, or more than 9 planes, none of which were 180 degress from one another, that demonstrate a FLO pattern. If you add this up with both sides of one plane, and each plane has different characteristics then EVERY shaft has between 4 and 18 locations where each shaft demonstrates a Flo pattern to the naked eye. Therefore, what is the difference in each FLO:...Hard side -soft side,... thick side- thin side...., flat side-round side..??

Only one plane is the PURE (Plane of Uniform REpeatability) and each side of that one PURE plane effects the shot differently when put in the hit direction. Good Luck..

Can you explain why the pure plane changes once the shaft is cut? But it doesn't appear to change when using a laser to find FLO?

When you swing a club, and the action loads the shaft, there is generally one cycle of flex to the motion. Swing back to the top and start the down swing and the "loading" begins. The premise is that you want the shaft to "unload" its energy as it is impacting the ball.

Having said this, the tendency for an unaligned shaft to veer off course is unmeasurable, currently. In theory, the most stable plane of oscillation should be oriented towards the target. You will have to make a judgment "call" to decide what is best for your situation. Is the frequency of one of your planes more in line with the slope you are building to? Have you found the stable plane with a laser, and watched the pattern? Will what ever you decide affect the "feel"? Are you doing this without the club heads or in a simulated "built" state with club heads fastened?

My approach is to weight sort components, adjust lofts and lies, cpm sort shafts, FLO shafts without heads, cut shafts to cpm slope, temporarily fasten heads, check loft and lies, FLO assembly , trim, orient, re-FLO, final install, check lofts and lies, grip, polish ferrules, check lofts and lies, clean up and package. You can sweat the smallest details but you can't control the opinion of the customer no matter how much you convince yourself it matters. He will always want something you cannot provide and that is perfect ball striking every time.

You can see that I stress FLO in different parts of the build but I am more concerned with lofts and lies because of how much of a difference they can make in the performance of a club. Way more important than shaft orientation.

Your mind and heart are in the right place though.

Happy Holidays

Good Question: The PURE plane does not change when the shaft is cut, BUT IT MAY CHANGE if there is an excessive amount of length cut from both the butt and tip ends of a shaft (SAY 2" FROM THE TIP AND 3" FROM THE BUTT AS AN EXAMPLE)... especially in composite material shafts. Steel may not change at all on minor butting. Many composites regardless of quay or price may have overlays of material especially in the tip that could be interfered with by virture of a cut altering their length after PUREing. Therefore, there is a possibility that it could alter the spot. It is possible, but not likely!!

In an ideal world (that does not always even exist on Tour), shafts should be cut as close as possible to playing length prior to PURE alignment to aleviate your question. SST constantly checks new composite shafts to see if their layup(s) may, when tipped or butted, alter the shafts characteristics, but without having a SST machine, only an SST licensee could confirm this. Any licensee of SST can trim a shaft prior to PUREing. Because yours' is a common question, but not a positive fact, and to aleviate any possible confusion as SST expands their technology with the new 20 second automated machine, SST shaft distributors will next year require shafts to be trimmed prior to PUREing to as close to playing length as possible leaving room for final adjustments by the installer.... SST clubmaker licensees already do this.

In my opinion and many of those I work with, the laser light pattern in what may be perceived as a flat line, means NOTHING! Keep turning your shaft and see how many flat lines you can see??? .. and then tell us what the difference is in the performance of the shaft in each of those various locations.

I have only found one dominant line of least oscillation that will lend itself to performing admirably for the one cycle it needs to, during a swing. This is the case for the many shafts I have FLO ed, both steel and composite. Even the highly regarded +/- 1 cpm of the SK Fiber gear shows one dominant plane of reliability with a laser.

Happy Holidays.
