Refitting old irons or getting new custom-fit irons?

I've been playing a set of TaylorMade Supersteels for the past 5 years, and I never had them custom fit. Basically I saw a good deal at GS and bought them when I started playing. Now that my swing has gotten somewhat better and more consistent, I'm wondering if I shouldn't go back and get my Supersteels re-shafted and custom fit for my game, or if I should stick them in the closet and invest in a new set of irons.

Depends if you are willing to spend the money. There are ALOT of better clubs out there these days. It would be worth a look if you have the cash. You may get quite an improvement. The most important thing in equipment is proper fit and you very rarely get that buying off the rack. Good luck!!!

Personally I'd just get a new set of irons all together. You'd be utterly suprised with all the new technology out there. If price is an issue, I've gotcha covered. There are some sweet deals out there. I don't know what kind of player you are so I'll give you some ideas.

Cleveland TA6......$399 lowest I saw on ebay

Cobra 3100..........$450 sweetest clubs for the money

Cleveland Launcher LP....$399 Cleveland doesn't make bad irons (this is a deal)

Mizuno MX-17.................$499 another great club

New Clubs all the way. By the time you get those clubs fit to you, you would be able to get a new set for only a little more.

I'm leaning toward the new irons for a couple hundred bucks more. Anything I should check out in the forged arena outside of the Mizuno MX-23 and Cleveland CG4? Right now I'm shooting 90s and I want a set of clubs I can play into the low 80s as I improve over the next few years.

You seem to be in the same boat as me. I was looking for a set of irons I could sort of grow my game with. I tried the MX-23's, the CG4's, Cally X18's, Ping G5 & I5, TM RAC LT, Mizzy MP-60, Titleist 804OS.

 

To me, the Mizuno MX-23's tested out to be the best fit for me, with the MP-60's being a surprisingly close second. I've gone with the 23's, and have also picked up a set of the 60's (got a pretty good deal on the 60's). The Ping I5's, and TM RAC LT's are also pretty good. Being a Cleveland fan, I was disappointed in the CG4's. They felt too light to me, and I felt like I was fighting them in my swing.

 

I would say demo most of these irons several times. I did three demo's at 2 different stores with most of the same irons before making my decision. Each time the Mizunos did well for me (both the 23's and the 60's). If you can, I would suggest a demo at a driving range (hitting off the grass).
