Losing My AZ Virginity

I heard about the recent rennovation. This is my first time out in Arizona, I am there for a college visit in Phoenix, anyways has the course gotten back into shape and where is it headed and if there is anything I could learn bout the course.

Talked with a buddy who played it last week, he told me its in alright shape... nothing to brag about. Check out the legacy or Raven at south mountain, little more money but a leap in conditions.

I guess I am just mostly wondering if it would be a good place where I can improve as a player since that would be our home course for the collegiate golf team.

I heard about the recent rennovation. This is my first time out in Arizona, I am there for a college visit in Phoenix, anyways has the course gotten back into shape and where is it headed and if there is anything I could learn bout the course.

The renovation of Papago has been described as a "work in progress." So far, the fairways, bunkers and greens have been rebuilt and a totally new irrigation system installed. The fairways and bunkers are in fine shape. The greens being new, will take a bit of time to mature to where they will roll true and be able to be cut low. (a bit bumpy and slow right now). I would like to see a few more trees taken out and the rough cut back to further open up the playing corridors and add some interest around the greens. A temporary clubhouse for now and the periphery is still pretty rough around the edges. It still has a muni look HOWEVER, do not let that scare you away. Playing Papago regularly will make you a strong golfer. The design of the course is quite interesting with great natural use of the land and is a stern test from the tips which have been stretched to 7300 yards. One weak point from my view are the par 3's, three of which are in the 200+ yard range. The course has a core routing without housing intrusion, great views of the nearby buttes and is a GREAT WALK.

Papago for sure does not approach the plush conditions of many of the daily fee courses, but the course itself will stand up to most any other in the valley. For me, the Raven at S. Mountain is the most overrated course in town, perpetually soggy conditions and a boring design. If I had 10 rounds to split between the Raven S. Mtn and Papago I would play Papago ten times.

I recommend to give Papago a play during your visit. Good luck in your search for a school!!
