Upro Screen Problem?

Recommended Posts

Smudges on screen?
I just bought a used Upro on E-bay that was advertised as "excellent" condition by a reputable seller. I know, I know. I am frugal. :busted2:
Anyway, I noticed that the screen had some "smudges" or translucent ink-blot shaped marks on it. I figured they might go away when I turned it on a used it for a while. On Saturday I used the unit and although I could see the screen in Pro-mode, the marks did reflect somewhat and made the screen harder to see. E-mailed the seller and he said it is a known issue per Upro. His buddy has a Upro and after 2 -3 rounds the marks showed up on his unit.

I called Upro and they indicated that this is not typical.

What has been your experiences? Am I being picky or does the screen just look like this after a few rounds?

Thanks for any input.

Jim

I have not e-mailed the seller again. I wanted to make sure that I wasn't being to picky or that this was typical situation that owner get and just live with it.

I know laptops sometimes get something like this on a screen and then is eventually goes away.

It is strange that one of the 1st things that the tech asked me is whether or not I bought it on Ebay.

The seller had 200+ sales and all were 100% positive. Thought I could trust that. Maybe not.

Don't know if it's a general problem or not, but mine definately has smudges. I followed C.S. advice and removed all screen protectors so that ProMode maps would show up better, and feel that this probably contributed to the smudges. I intend to try using a soft damp cloth to see if that will remove them, but haven't tried it yet -- I Very Seldom use the ProMode maps because of difficulty seeing them.

I agree. The pro-mode will probably only be used for checking out the layout of a course I have not played or measuring the distance to the end of a dog leg. It is too hard to differentiate fairway, trees, etc...

I wish they had the option for the course to be layed out in a 4 or 5 color caracature format that is bright and easy to see. Like the GPS's on the golf cart but will all the bells and whistles that tell you distances to the hazards and allow you to measure.

Thanks for your input.

P.S. How do I know whether or not there is a sceen protector on the unit? (Maybe the scuffs are on the screen protector and not the screen.) I don't want to add more scratches than already exist. I tried to get under one corner with my thumbnail but was unsucessful.

I got similar smudges on the screen of my uPro. I believe it's the anti-glare coating they put on the screen that makes it susceptible to smudges like that. I tried to remove the individual smudges, but was unsuccessful since it's the coating that gets smudged, not the screen. You can remove the entire screen coating - I used an LCD screen cleaner (which contains isopropyl alcohol) and a microfiber towel, and just rubbed until the coating came off. I had to reapply the screen cleaner a few times to get the entire screen, but it worked.
Now that it is done, would you do it again?

In other words, does the unit now have more glare and is harder to read without the coating than if you would have left it on?
My uPro had some kind of a soft coating on the screen - so soft it rapidly became covered with scratches from sliding in and out of the uPro carrying case. A little spit and a microfiber towel took it right off. Now the screen is crystal clear and blemish free. I collects the occasional smudge, but they wipe right off with a soft cloth. It's been a while since I cleaned the coating off the screen, and have never had a bit of regret.
