Hogan BH5 Reduced Offset and Offset Irons, Opinions?

I am looking at the Hogan BH5 Irons, anyone have experience with them? Particularly, can someone tell me the difference in the standard set versus the offset version? Is the standard set more like a typical tour version of other manufacturers irons? While the offset plays mor elike the standard game improvement iron?

Also, anyone have specs on the graphite and steel shafts in these clubs (weight etc.?) and finally, the lofts for each iron in the set? I cant find any of this info anywhere it seems...

Thansk for your help?!

hey just read your post and the best way to answer your questions about the hogan iron is to ask another question. have you ever played the callaway x 14 standard iron and the x 14 pro series? wow these sets are almost identical in set up. when hogan (who is owned by callaway now) introduced the new iron the rep asked me the same question and passed them off as the twin to the x 14. so check around look for the x 14 they would have better resell if you ever decided to get rid of them. but also youll probably get a real deal on the hogan to start with.

14stix. You've pegged it. I've taken the comparison quite far. I'm currently playing standard X-14's and like them a lot except for the offset. The offset is an aiming problem for me, possibly because I learned to play as a junior in the 60's with WS blades. I've played the X-14's for about a year, and still want to compensate for the offset at address (granted that this is a mental problem). My trajectory is also a bit too high due to the Cally (TT) Constant Weight uniflex shafts. My other smaller gripe is the occasional "hot shot" I get, which may be Callaway's VFT.

To remedy this I started looking at the X-18 Pro Series, then noticed the BH-5's on sale (close-out) and I had always admired the looks and craftsmanship. The specs for the BH-5 match the X-14 Pro Series exactly as to loft and lie and both sets are in the 580 gram range per club. This is also the case for the BH-5 Offset and the standard X-14. The Hogans are 1/4 inch shorter per club than the Callaway's per spec sheets on both sets. I've visually compared them at the store, and it is hard to see a difference in the head shapes. The face arrangements are identical. Major differences are that the BH-5 has a conventional hosel, albeit a relatively short one to be closer in length to the Cally type, and the BH-5 has a uniform cavity, instead of the VFT. The BH-5 does have a thin face with varied thickness from long iron to wedges.

At the range, a BH-5 6 iron with the Apex 3 (regular) steel shaft, was about the same carry distance as my standard X-14 6 iron, and an X-18 PS 6 iron with DG S300. In summary, 3 buckets later, I was marginally more consistant in distance with the BH-5 and considerably more accurate with both the X-18 PS and BH-5. Trajectory with the BH-5 was what I would call mid-high and probably mid with the X-18 PS.

So what did I do. I bought a "like new" set of X-14 Pro series irons from Cally Pre-Owned which arrived Saturday. Absolutely gorgeous to look at with new faces and highly polished heads, and Oh those BB cord grips with CW Rifle shafts!!! But, never hit, they will be going back and the BH-5's are "on hold" at the store. The 7 iron is 1/8" too long and the 5 iron is 3/16" long with in-between 6 iron 3/8" shorter than the 5 in between. The 3 is short also. The 6 iron is a full swingweight point below the average of the other clubs. I am wondering about their 10-point inspection.

I have hit the BH-5 with steel and graphite shafts and the Bh-5 Offset with steel. Rather than Tour versus Game Improvement, I would characterize it as Game Improvement with or without Offset. Unlike the X-14 where there is a small noticeable difference in sole width, etc. between the std. and Pro Series, the BH-5's seem to have identical heads with or without offset. The surprise for me was that I could work these clubs quite well. There is progressive offset to both but the less-offset version is better for me, particularly with the shorter irons, of course. Please see my other post.

The BH Apex shafts seemed very good and these models are made by True Temper. Apex 3 is regular, 4 is stiff, and so on. I was unable to match them up with the regular TT models based on the step pattern. The shaft bands say they are frequency-matched and I tend to believe this, as all clubs measured within a 6 gram span in total weight, and fell between D1 and D2 in swingweight.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
