Looking for Beginner course ideas Howard Cty MD area

Recommended Posts

Been trying to take up the game for the last couple years. Go to the Driving range weekly, occassionally play chip and putt and rarely get out "for real' because quite simply i really don't know anyone that plays golf.

Took a group lesson to try and meet some people to play with but no luck.

I am looking for some reccomendations on where i can go play in the Howard County Md area.

Basically i am hoping to find somewhere i can go play keeping in mind

-i practice but i'm inexperienced and am very inconsistent

-i would be going alone and while willing to play as a single realize i will probably be paired up

-for the most part i would be going on the weekend so i'm assuming late afternnoon would be best?maybe could squueze in a weeknight at 5:30 or 6 once in awhile

-course doesn't have to be great but has to be a place that doesn't look down upon single or beginners

Due to an injury ,golf is the only sport left i can play and it has been frustrating for me trying to "break into" the game so

any course suggestions would be extremely helpful

from playing around the internet i found a few places that might fit my needs if anyone has heard of them

Gunpowder in laurel

Willow springs in west friendship

Forest park in woodlwan

CBGolf:
As Elunoputter stated, post your question in the All Things Maryland Golf thread. I play a lot at Timbers and any course worth their salt wouldn't "look down" on a beginner golfer :D (golf industry is hurting for golfers) Hang around our group in the Maryland Golf Thread enough and you'll see us post not only scheduled outings, but last minute "I'm playing here any one to come out and play" rounds as well. We've all been there, starting out and our group is pretty diverse ranging from high handicappers all the way down to low single digits. Frustration is part of the game as your swing can be spot on one minute, and all over the place the next, but its golf so that is to be expected.
As for courses - for practice, I would recommend Timbers At Troy and Waverly Woods. Both offer a grass range (which might be closed now since we're technically out of season but they do have mats as well) driving range as well as decent chipping greens and fantastic practice putting areas.
Gunpowder is a dirt track - I played there a year or so ago a couple of times and it's not a bad place to hone your game. I would recommend Willow Springs over Gunpowder as that's an executive course. You can still practice driver and approach shots and putting, but in much, much better shape then gunpowder.
I'm starting a men's league at Timbers so that might be right up your alley as it's a league designed for all levels of players out there. Now that you posted, you'll find there are a lot of us golfers out there ;)

Good luck..
