I know it's a lil early...but

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I know the PGA still a few weeks away, but I was out at Medinah practicing yesterday and I took a little walk on #3. The rough is already extremely think and probably at 5.5 to 6 inches deep. New sprinklers in the tree lines are making it even more difficult to punch out of the trees from an errant drive. (Good luck Tiger). The course will play around 7600 yards, so don't expect to see many 2-irons or 3 woods off of the tees. The greens were partially aerated to allow them to shave them and not burn out like in 99. Carts have not been allowed in the rough for a few weeks now and the course closes this Sunday to make the final push before the pros arrive. In the next week or so quite a few tour guys are planing trips for practice rounds, and Mickelson has already played it on July 4th, shot a tidy 66. If I get a chance to get back out when they are out there, I'll be sure to post.

I almost forgot. There are also plenty of tents on 18 for Phil to play off. Yea I'm bad. :man_in_love:

Ahh, that explains Mickelson's performance at the British Open -- he was too busy studying the layout at Medinah in his hotel room in Liverpool...

[Nobody can say he doesn't deserve this abuse after his interview during the week of the Western Open where he said he was studying the course at Hoylake...]

An interesting subject that does not get touched upon much by the media is the relative success of players who do not study the course as much as PM. I'm not going to fault PM much for studying a major course like it's a final exam; it did help him win majors. But one has to wonder how much studying is too much when someone like TW wraps Royal Liverpool around his fingers and didn't do anywhere near the prep that PM did.

Is it a case of detailed prep PM style is overrated or the fact that all the studying in the world cannot overcome some lousy swings? Clearly PM was not his usual self with some of his shots last week that got him into trouble, but it seemed all that studying didn't help some of his recovery shots. After all, how do you study for a f'd lie in the gourse? Get deep in there and you end up with a tough shot and a tough one to predict the outcome, that's golf.

Don't discount Tiger too quick. Maybe not too many 2-irons and 3 wds for the majority, but the long hitters can still hit those two clubs further than most hit 3wd and driver. The problem is they have a hard time with long irons into the green (and short irons at Hoylake).

I'm thinking we'll see a mix of strategies from now on, especially from el Tigre.

With the severity of the greens at Medinah and how fast they will be rolling, you can't be playing for run-ups and bouncing shots into the greens with 3,4 and 5 irons. Even with drivers, players are still going to have mid to long irons in their hands with the course playing 7600 yards. You almost have to play for those shots in links golf, but it will wear on players a LOT at a place like Medinah

I guess it only took 3 irons and 5woods, with a mix of a few 3wds and driver to get it done....
