Swing building advice

Recommended Posts

I am beginning my third season of golf, and while I think I have a pretty good grasp of the fundamentals, I am having a hard time ingraining them into my swing.

What is the best way to go about ingraining fundamentals? Should I pick one thing and just work on it until I can do it without thinking about it (ignoring everything else) and then move on to the next thing? Or are there certain things that if I ignore them will cause me to ingrain an incorrect motion?

My biggest flaw is not transferring my weight to my left side during the downswing. When I focus on that exclusively, I'm not sure if I still start my downswing with a hip turn, or I forget to keep my left arm completely straight during the backswing, or I forget to straighten my right arm during the downswing, or I forget to keep my right elbow in, or I'm too much on the balls of my feet during the swing. If I try to focus on all of these issues, I end up doing nothing right.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ron

Alright Ron, since I see you have no responders I'll throw you my two cents worth. IMHO, learn the moves first. It's like learning to dance, karate moves or any sequence of steps or moves. Hogan was, by his own admission, changing and perfecting his swing throughout his career. If nothing else the bodily changes as your body ages will cause you to have to make some sort of modifications whether they happen naturally or purposely. Like learning a dance, you'll not be able to memorize all the moves then jump out on the dance floor and cut a rug like Fred Astaire. It's a slow process just to learn the moves. Then connecting all of them is a slow and tedious journey that not many have the time, patience and dedication to follow through with.

My advise, start slow, add a piece of the puzzle at a time and don't expect miracles overnight. Once you feel you have all the movements mastered, then speed up the swing, again slowly, making sure all the movements remain intact. Remember, if it was easy, all the golf courses would be covered in mini-Hogans. Patience and dedication will have you golfing like Fred Astaire used to dance.

Good Luck,
The Grieving One

I'm not an expert on what to teach first or how to sequence the many fundamentals, but what your take on this MizJoe?

IMO , one should start ingraining the hands and arms movements first. Educated hands. Once you've truly educated it, I think you should now be having a draw swing and your balls should have a propensity to go left, but long. Once you've learned to get the ball left all the time with consistency...lol...I think it's now time to introduce the body leading in transition or DS.

You're right on with the educated hands hg101. That's straight out of TGM. And then learn to move those educated hands with the pivot. :good:
