teaching golf with a certificate

HI guys,

I want to teach golf on the side and would like to get the license. I'll go for level 1 since I can at least tell a beginner, that I know what I'm doing. haha

Anyone ever take these courses? These seem easier than being PGA affiliated..What are your thoughts?

I am a USGTF certified teaching pro. I am also about to go through the PGA procces as well.

The USGTF is good for a small town course with no PGA guys around. Get ready to be questioned by everyone about it though when you get it. Especially guys. They will wonder about its creditabilty. Its a great program. Nothing much to it though.

It will definalty not get you as far as the PGA will though. Remember I am about to enter the PGA program.

I went through the program and I thought it was the biggest joke EVER. Complete waste of money. You would get a better experience spending the money some where else. This organization is preying on people who hate their jobs, love golf, and long for a different career.

 

I would avoid it like the plague.

 

There is no more correlation between USGTF and a good instruction then their is being born at night and being a good golfer. You could be born at night and a good golfer but one has nothing to do with the other.

Well, as you can see from my signature - I'm certified - I wanted to know the most about the golf swing - so I opted for level 3 - now having said that - did I learn anything I didn't know, somewhat...but I know alot about the golf swing and I mean a lot. I can see something on tv and impart it into my swing instantly - hand eye coordination whatever you want to call it, raw talent, LOL, I'm a head case though, so I don't want anyone saying 'well why aren't you on the pga, nationwide, blah blah blah' there's a big difference between being a great swinger of the golf club and shooting 5-10 under par on a given day.

 

I went to a real college and got a real degree -

PGA program wants to make you go to school to learn to balance a budget, order merchandise, run a pro shop, operate a cash register, etc etc which wasn't right for me, I have a degree in business management which means I already know nothing about everything, hahaha

 

We could all be a CEO of a fortune 500 company and screw people outta their money just as easily - -but you need to go to harvard and yale and follow up with MBA etc etc - in other words, if you want to teach and dont' know squat and need a bit of accrediation (USGTF has 19,000 members world wide on every continent, PGA uses them to refresh their students cuz it's only about teaching without all the BS, PGA has 23,000 members) so it's the second biggest. to become level 3 certified is the same or less money as first 3-6 months of pga program and they want 3,000 every year - how many lessons you gotta give to recoup investment?

 

Work at a course= PGA because they run the show teach high school golf and be good at it = USGTF

Also went through the course back in 2000. If you just plan on working at a local driving range doing some lessons and promote yourself that way, you could scratch out a modest living. I 100% agree that no one heard about USGTF when you tell them your an instructor. I had alot of "did you play on TV before". I have visited the SDGA in Orlando and seemed top notch. The $400 you will spend on the level one is a joke and I dont recommend it. Also dues every year are very expensive to maintain your certification. I stopped at the level one after seeing what you get from the level three course. Other then the PAT for the level 3 you can learn more from a couple instruction books. I was making $60/hr giving lessons which included a bucket of balls but some weeks you were doing nothing waiting for some one to ask for a lesson.I have been a single digit hcp since hs/college and look like a tour pro when you are giving lessons to new students. I chose a different career path and couldnt bear the thought of watching guys wiff at the ball over and over again.. :russian_roulette: If you love golf, you will stay away from instructing.
