Can you get started for cheap?

Hey everyone. I've gotten my 16 year old nephew into golf and he has picked it up pretty quickly. He has a massive build as you can see from the pic and his swing speed is gnarly. I don't have the actual numbers but he is flying his 56* sand wedge where I hit my PW 135+ yards.

 

I really want to get him into long driving and see if he likes it but I cannot find any equipment at a low cost. I guess there's not really a big market because the equipment doesn't last long? Does anyone have a suggestion of a long drive driver I could pick up for him at a low cost just to see if he likes it.

 

I know nothing about long driving except they use like 4 or 6* drivers, so I guess maybe a 7.5* would be a good stepping stone into the sport?

Get him a 46" Taylormade Superfast 8* or 8.5* with an x stiff shaft. Should be able to find one under a hundo. A long , stiff as possible shaft is where LD begins.

If you go on longdrivers.com and go to forum and click on equipment click on the one that says "drivers for sale" and the user is don hihn and hes selling some good drivers around the 6* at 49.75" adams i bought one and i love and I've just started myself and thats the first long driver I've bought. And there cheap too. Around $115.

how far does he avg? I always go againts getting a used driver especailly for LD Specific setup as you never know the condition that it is in and you want to make sure the setup is right for him. Last thing you want to do is get a XXX flex shaft that is 50 inches tipped an inch pulled 5 times and a head that was beat with range balls and over 500 hits. LD is a sport and hobbie that is pricey, for beginners, rather spend money that includes a warranty with each part than keep paying and breaking clubs that arent right for him...

That why I asked here first, I figured used LD drivers were not a good idea. He avgs with an old Mizuno 10.5* S flex around 290. But that's the average and he has potential if he works on ball striking.

Tell me about it. I've been trying. I want him to train for long drive and work on his mechanics.

LD is not about mechanics, its about how far you can hit a ball. So the whole thought process is swing as fast as you can and hit the ball as hard as you can. There are so many types of swings in LD, its not one magic swing that is best.
