Organizing a Company Golf Outing

Help! Advice Needed.

Today at the company committee meeting, I was "volunteered" to assess the interest and financial viability of a company golf outing, and put together a proposal for the same.

Has anyone ever done this before? I think this could be a "feather in my cap" if I could pull this off and make it happen within budget, but I don't really know where to start.

I suspect we could have anywhere from 25-40 people who might want to take part. We would want small prizes for best scores, worst shot, etc. - but nothing fancy or expensive. Probably food. I would need to submit a proposed budget and the details of what the budget would cover. And then I would have to implement the whole thing.

I'm not looking for anyone to do the work for me. I'm just looking for a starting point, tips, tricks, and pitfalls to look out for. Basically, I'm hoping I can learn from other people's experiences.

I would start by calling courses you would want to play and seeing what they can do for you. Most of the munis I have worked at have outings every day of the week. They have had set price lists for golf, cart, prize options as well as food. The last course I worked at you had to reserve a block of at least 10 times, so you would have to pay for a minimum of 40 people and 20 carts and then there was a certain dollar amount of "merchandise only" gift certificates you had to buy based on the size of the group. The gift certicates were then broken up into the dollar amounts wanted to give out as prizes.

 

I know some private courses will do outings on Mondays. It might be a good way to get on a course you couldn't another way.

In the Air Force we call it being voluntold. When I would set them up for our squadron I'd use a Callaway scoring system so I could get people who didn't play much golf involved. This keeps everything fair and eliminated the sandbaggers. Check with a course first to find out what deals they have for tourneys--Mondays are normally a good time. See if you can find a private course in the area that opens things up for company outings. And you could always check around to see what you can get donated. Then we'd do a blind drawing to pair people up.

I just did it.. I had never organized an event in my life, and knew anything about it. Called a good course, told them I had 38 people that wanted to play, they sent me a package with all the info, and took care of everything. Walk in the park..
