I have just got back into golf and see GPS are the new thing. I think great as saves me doing yardard books for each of the courses i used to play.

 

having used a number of them, i have a tip

 

purchase a cheap android phone (LG 400 telstra) for $69, then use the free gps programs. works great and makes the whole process alot cheaper. Note you can upgrade from the free 3 courses to all courses for $4.99

Note: golfshot gps is also great, course is $29.95.

 

i have found the battery life (if using just as gps is alot longer, plus you have the option to add other apps if required, or just use the phone purely as a gps unit.

 

hope this helps others.

 

i will probably give the new android watches a go when as they are being released, saves just purchasing a stand alone unit.

I walk 99% of the time and own a Leopold GX-4I as well as the golfshot app. Use my rangefinder most of the time but I love having the app as well, have the clicgear gps holder and golfshot is perfect for seeing the layout if the hole, lay up distances, tracking my club distances off the tee and also if its a blind shot its nice not looking around for a sprinkler head or wasting people's time by pacing off distances down a hill if I don't have a clear shot at the pin. Golfshot is also great for score cards and tracking stats. There are free gps apps out there but i think it's worth the $30

Some may want to confirm but I believe using a phone is illegal per usga rules. Also, $69---- what about the data plan? I just bought a brand new UPro mx+ for $85 with no data plan or extra charges.

I use the golflogix championship edition app and I have no complaints. It even has my home course, which is a tiny 9 hole course I never expected when I downloaded the app. It was originally free, but if you want to use other features (scorecard, club tracker, etc) other than the gps it costs $20 annually. This app is relatively easy on the battery life as it only used 20% battery throughout an 18 hole round.
