Are These Tour Edge Irons Good For A Beginner/High Handicapper? (Tour Edge SP1 Plus)

Howdy all. Long-time lurker, but this is my first post.

This weekend, my girlfriend's dad found out I have began getting into golf but don't have an actual set of clubs (aside from a mish-mash of old, various irons pulled out of my dad's storage unit). He (my girlfriend's dad) lent me his clubs saying I could use them until he needed them back (he hasn't played in over 7 years).

I was just wondering if you guys thought these would be appropriate for someone just really learning the game (had a couple lessons when I was around 10 years old; but, until recently, I hadn't picked up a club since I was about 12 years old).

My line of thinking is that if these clubs are suitable for a beginner, I can take the money that was ear-marked for a set of used clubs and put it towards some lessons instead.

The clubs are Tour Edge SP1 Plus irons w/Tour Edge graphite shafts (3-PW, and a Tour Edge Gap Wedge), unfortunately there is no indication of the shaft flex on these clubs. My main concern is they seem to have a thinner sole than most clubs meant for beginners (I don't even know if these clubs are meant for beginners).

I took some pictures of the SP1 Plus 8 iron, including a couple comparing it to my roommate's TM Burner 2.0 8 iron.

Let me know what y'all think about these irons for a hacker/newbie like myself!

Thanks for any help y'all can give me!

You can learn on anything. If the choice is between buying an SGI set and getting lessons....get the lessons. Even though the clubs arent going to be as forgiving as your new SGI clubs, your swing is probably inconsistent enough that an SGI club wouldnt cover up its faults. So i would stick with the TE's you have and get lessons with them.

At the end of the day a bad swing is a bad swing wether its with a shovel or a blade. The shovel can cover up slight misses, but nothing covers up a straight dig or blading of the ball.

Hi,

I would just take them out, play a round or two with them and see how you get on with them first.
I would most definatly get lesson first tho over buying a new set, its just so much easier to be set out on the right path when just starting out rather than building up bad habits that will have to be corrected later down the line.

Thanks for the replies!

I think I am just going to stick with these for at least this summer while I try to develop a consistent swing. Right now, my biggest problems with my swing are: a wicked hook; and when I do manage to hit the ball straight, it inevitably goes about 95-110 yards (that's with a driver, all the way down to a 9 iron). So it seems like the most important thing is going to be taking some lessons.

Luckily, I have a lesson this weekend with a PGA instructor (my girlfriend found a half-off groupon type thing online). Unfortunately he is about 45 minutes away from where I live. After the lesson this weekend, I will be looking into some lessons with the PGA instructor at the public course just a few minutes down the road from me. My budget looks like it will allow 3 1-hour long lessons at a price of $195; I have no dreams of getting to a single digit handicap or anything like that any time soon, I'd be excited if I could shoot around 100.

If you stick with it you will be able to shoot around 100-105 by the end of the summer. I started playing a few years ago and my first year I had the same goals and a similar problem (slice instead of hook) and through some practice, lessons and determination was able to really get my scores down fairly quickly.
