Carry bag for larger guys

Recommended Posts

I am looking to buy my brother a carry bag. He is 6'2" - about 325. He mentioned to wanted to start walking instead of riding but doesn't want a push/pull cart.

What bag(s) have straps that would be more comfortable for a larger/wider frame.

I did multiple searches but wasn't able to find anything.

Thanks

This is a good question and I also wonder. I am 6'5", around 300, and have had a tough time finding a comfortable bag. The last comfortable bag for me to carry was the single strap Ping of 10 years ago or so. Have not been able to find a comfortable two strap one.

5' 11" here, 280 lbs, I was about 360 lbs at my heaviest. Single strap Sunday bag is what I used for the past two seasons. I had a no name cheap stand bag but I found it very uncomfortable. This is my first season sub 300 lbs in a long time and I can finally use the double strap stand bag with no issues. Took a little bit to get the straps set up to my liking but now it is very comfortable.

Something like the Ping L8 or the Swift X series look ok as it almost like it is two single straps. I am leaning towards getting one of these as soon as I can to replace my current no name bag.

I'm 6'4" 285 and losing: In my experience, and I walk a lot, get a bag that you can adjust the straps easily on. Many bags have about the same design for straps in terms of length and padding, so there is not a lot to choose from other than weight, padding and location of pockets in my opinion. Like so many other things the bags are made for the average guy, and if you are a couple of standard deviations off the mean in terms of body shape :D , you have to adjust the equipment to fit you.

I've walked with the first gerneration Hoofer, a sun mounatin 3.5 made for Left handed golfers (I love this bag) an old sun Mountain MPB (little bigger than a 3.5 or 4.5, but a great bag IMO, and an old used Mackenzie Walker. I would recommend you go to a store that has a large selection of bags with a friend or a staff member at the store and try a lot of bags until you can adjust one to where it is comfortable for you to use. It will probably take a while to find what fits you best, and I would also recommend you take clubs and some other stuff that you normally put in your bag, load them up, and keep trying until you find the one you want. Find what bags adjust best for your body type.

In all honesty, if you are a very heavy person and want to walk, a push cart is is an excellent idea. It will take weight off your back and knees, causing less stress on those joints and helping to keep arthritis away. The more you walk, the thinner you get, better you feel, the better it will be for your body and then you can start carrying.

A Jones Bag may well be a good idea too, but if you can afford it, drop the big $$$ on a Mackenzie; be it a leather bag, Sunday bag, or their canvas or Nylon one. They may ever be able to to adjust the strapping to your specifications better than mass-produced bags.

Remember, this is free advice.
