How do PGA tour Pros practice?

How and for how long do most tour pros practice?

I heard stories of them hitting 1000 balls and practicing 12+ hours a day.

It doesn't seem very productive to me though.

My goal in life is to make it on tour, too.

I personally work on hitting every shot shape imaginable to a target and go through my pre shot routine. Once I hit two balls in a row the way I want I work on a different shot shape. I hit at most 50 balls, but prepare each shot as if my life depended on it.

Then I practice getting up and down until I get up and down 5 times in a row. Then do the putting ladder drill. Everything combined takes me about 2-3 hours of very intense practice and then I play 9 or 18 holes.

After that I hit the gym.

I was wondering how the worlds best players practice?

The 1000 balls a day thing is rubbish. That might be the case if you include 750 shots from within 80 yards of the pin, including putts.

Sounds to me like you are off to a good start. I'm sure there are lavish practice plans to read about and exercises you can mimick.

The best players maintain what they can already do well and work like crazy on their weak spots. Everyone is different. Find out what you suck at and fix it.

Why not get a coach if your not seeing productivity in your practice. That way they could give you a practice schedule that will work for you.

Also don't worry what Tour guys do they do it for a living, they have a career in golf.

Practice what works for you, stay within yourself and don't try to do so much.

My cable provider is Comcast. Their on demand menu has the first episode of the GC's Charles Barkley golf fix show with Hank Haney. I don't want to spoil the episode but during the first part of the interview with Hank H. and Charles, he ask if is ready to do "Tiger practice". Basically Hank goes through a 12hr break down from breakfeast to dinner on how Tigers practice day go. Charles H. agree's to it, and attempts to spend the entire day from 0600-1800 hitting golf balls in one shape or another. I doubt he does it but from what Haney says, Tiger seems to indicate that TW hit's at least a 1000 balls a day, just as Charles Barkley did the first day. Crazy....

They say it takes a million repititions to groove muscle memory. I keep losing count and having to start over.

I know one tour pro whose practice routine is to go out and practice in the morning for about 3 hours, then play a round of golf, then practice for another 2 hours or so after the round. And he puts about 60% of his practice time working on the short game. Then afterward he exercises for about 1-2 hours.

Shag bag. Pros practice hitting the ball they actually play. Most practice with range balls...then play a different pellet. It is a HUGE advantage to practice your exact shots and trajectory with your ball. Does not seem like much but you would not use range clubs to practice. This is an area where pros practice as they would hope to play.
