How much does added length affect shaft flex

Recommended Posts

Looking for some help. I tried searching the forums but couldn't find an answer to my question. I had my irons extended by 3/4" and are now 1" over standard ping specs. They have KBS tour shafts in them, but I was wondering with the added length what affect does this have on the flex of the shaft, if any? Are my stiff shafts playing closer to regular flex, and does this added length have any affect on the playing characteristics of the shafts (ie ball flight and spin).

Thanks for any help and advise on this

ASSUMING that the shaft is the same, the major effect on flex is how the shaft is tip trimmed and how much weight is hanging off the tip end.

If all that happened here is that a 3/4" butt extension was added WITH NO OTHER CHANGES, then not much has happened to flex.

However, it is now playing to a meaningfully higher swingweight (or MOI).

I just frequency tested a couple 1/2" over shafts and then at standard length and they r losing on average 5cpm's or half a flex. These were with kbs tour taper tip shafts and gripped. That's butt frequency for what it's worth.

FWIW, a typical frequency slope would be around 4 cpm per 0.5 inches.

So that kind of change represents a relatively constant 'flex'.

Yes I know that. With the same shaft 1/2" over on the 3 I tested when moved to standard length they gained a half flex or roughly 5cpm at the butt. So at 1" on a frequency meter over length at the butt you will lose roughly 1 flex.

I guess I don't understand what you are saying. 1/2" longer and 5 cpm slower is NOT much of a change in flex (in most cases).

10cpm change weaker on an inch longer shaft is 1 flex. Stiff becomes Regular. This is measured with a frequency meter.

Check the following (as an example).

http://bidulock.ca/don/javascripts/golf/Brunswick/tabulate.html

You'll find that a 1 inch change in length at constant flex is around an 8 cpm change.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
