Might be moving to Vegas... need Golf Info

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I may be moving to Vegas, and working in the Summerlin area. I do not know the area at all. I was wondering if anyone can recommend areas to live that are not too far (1/2 hour or less from Summerlin). I have 2 kids, age 8 and 11, so schools are pretty important. Here's the golf part. I practice a lot. Generally I go to the range for about an hour and a half before work every morning. I am looking for a range that has nice grass hitting surfaces (no artificial turf/mats), and good range balls, at a reasonable price. Preferably a range that offers monthly membership and/or volume bucket discount pricing. Ideally, I would like this range to either be close to where I will be living, or on the way to work (which is off Box Canyon drive in Summerlin).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I would say your best option for what you are looking for in a practice area is TPC Las Vegas, it's a public course, however I'm not exactly sure of their practice fees. That's the best option I can give you, good luck on your move here, a lot of people don't like it here at first, but once they get accustomed to it, they usually like it.

Summerlin the best and most stable area in Las Vegas. Best schools as well, you are lucky to be working in the area as it is the most ideal area to live as well, especially with children.

Now about golf:

Best and most reasonable practice areas are in Sun City (which is a part of Summerlin). They sell a card that has 15 tokens (5 large buckets of balls) for $20 - the same amount of balls for $50 just about everywhere else. Not everyone knows about these cards, you gotta ask, otherwise you will never know about them.

Sun City Eagle Crest - Grass driving range only, good chipping green with bunker and great putting green (wasnt always the case as the putting green is now very good).

Sun City Highland Falls Palm Valley - Grass driving range but both are now more often on mats (call to find out) weekends on grass, weekdays seem on mats in the winter, ok chipping green, just ok putting green.

Sun City Palm Valley - skip this one - mostly on mats but does have small grass driving range, no chipping green, just ok putting green.

TPC Las Vegas is the most expensive practice range in town. $10 for maybe 25-30 balls. Fantastic putting green. Note: they really do not want people practicing there and the prices reflect that.

Sienna has a very small driving range and the grass is very sparse, most of the balls are also in bad shape. Putting green is terrible now.

Paiute - World class practice areas (2) separate grass driving range, great chipping green and excellent putting greens. They have a annual membership for practicing $225 only what you can practice there.

Aliante - Grass driving range, good chipping green and good putting green.

Silverstone - Grass driving range, good chipping green and good putting green.

Painted Desert - Small Grass driving range, NO chipping green, ok putting green. Has a monthly membership for range balls of $50 and includes a round of golf.

Las Vegas Golf Club (Muni) - Huge grass range, has a seperate chipping and putting green for those that have the monthly membership of $50.

Note: they really do not want people practicing there and the prices reflect that. Now it's $15 for a small bucket, balls are great though. I come here just to practice short game, they have the best facilities I've seen, and they can't charge you for using their chipping and putting greens.

Sienna has a very small driving range and the grass is very sparse, most of the balls are also in bad shape. Putting green is terrible now. Terrible place to practice.

Paiute - World class practice areas (2) separate grass driving range, great chipping green and excellent putting greens. They have a annual membership for practicing $225 only what you can practice there. Very nice place, but WAY north, I'd say 20-25 minutes from summerlin.

Aliante - Grass driving range, good chipping green and good putting green. Decent place, but also more on the north northeast side, it will about 25 minutes to get there from summerlin.

Silverstone - Grass driving range, good chipping green and good putting green. Close to alliante.

Painted Desert - Small Grass driving range, NO chipping green, ok putting green. Has a monthly membership for range balls of $50 and includes a round of golf. This is the best deal, with Sun city coming in second. Not too far from summerlin.

Las Vegas Golf Club (Muni) - Huge grass range, has a seperate chipping and putting green for those that have the monthly membership of $50. I went here once, and the only bad thing I noticed was the grass is like crab grass.

Angel Park- They hit off mats during the evening, but week DAYs they have grass, I think it's $10 for a large bucket, and they have a new short game area that's pretty good.

There are nicer courses around summerlin, but a lot of them charge $20 for a small bag of balls, because they don't want people practicing.

As far as where to live, summerlin is also the most expensive place in Vegas, and the closer you get to the strip the cheaper and less appealing it becomes. If you look at where summerlin parkway and the 215 intersect, just go either north or south (not east) and you'll be fine. :drinks:

Agree with bombn and sbguard9. Let me add about Angel Park is that they offer range discount cards as well as their OB cards which give you rates of $35-$55 any day at either Angel Park (2 courses), Aliante, or Legacy plus discounted specials at Coyote Springs (new Jack Nicklaus course about an hour from Vegas.)

The OB card is sold for $99 the end of the calendar year and $149 other months, it gives you 10 free small buckets, 5 free rounds at their putting course, 2 free rounds at the Cloud 9 course, and a free hat. Angel Park is right in the middle of Summerlin close to Summerlin Parkway and across the street from Suncoast Casino. They have several putting greens, full practice facility, a couple of academies.
