NEW AUTOBIOGRAPHY DETAILS THE AMAZING STORY OF HOW ALICE COOPER

SLAYED HIS THIRSTY DEMONS WITH A GOLF CLUB

ALICE COOPER, GOLF MONSTER FILLED WITH TOUCHING, HILARIOUS, AND SURPRISING STORIES

OF THE LIFE AND CAREER OF THE MAN WHO INVENTED SHOCK ROCK

● ● ●

"My liver would like to dedicate this book to me for giving up drinking and taking up golf."

ALICE COOPER, GOLF MONSTER: A Rock 'n' Roller's 12 Steps to Becoming a Golf Addict (publication date May 8, 2007) is the story of Cooper's life, and also a story about golf. As Alice explains in the opening pages, "Even though golf and rock 'n' roll are two very different animals, both remain very strong forces in my life. If rock 'n' roll made my life, then golf saved my life."

Born Vincent Damon Furnier, Alice was a good kid who loved sports, girls, rock 'n' roll, and art. His life changed when he heard the Beatles, which led him to try his own hand at music. After pulling together (in Alice's words) a "simply awful" band and performing some Beatles songs in a local talent show, he never looked back. From then on, it was "No More Mr. Nice Guy."

In ALICE COOPER, GOLF MONSTER, Alice shares some of the incredible stories of his life, including:

  • His unlikely friendship with, among others, Groucho Marx, who would have Alice come over and talk to him all night when he suffered from insomnia, and Peter Sellers, who for some unknown reason called Alice "Inspector Maurice Escargot"

  • How Alice developed his prototype look for performances

  • How Alice's longtime manager, Shep Gordon, got in the business: He met Jimi Hendrix poolside at the Landmark Hotel in L.A., and Hendrix said, "Aren't you Jewish? You should be a manager"

  • The truth behind the infamous killing-a-chicken-onstage incident, the first event to bring Alice national notoriety

  • Alice's friendship with his idol, Salvador Dalí, and his experience of posing for Dalí for a holographic sculpture of Alice's brain

  • Drying out (twice) and trading dozens of drinks a day for 36 holes a day—the replacement of one addiction with another

  • Unforgettable times hanging out with Hollywood stars (and being honored as the first rocker invited to join the Friars Club)

  • Getting in the Guinness Book of World Records for playing in front of the largest indoor crowd ever: 158,000 cheering, screaming fans in São Paulo, Brazil

  • Late nights at L.A.'s famous Rainbow Bar and Grill in the "Lair of the Vampires" room with Keith Moon, Harry Nilsson, John Lennon, Bernie Taupin, and occasional drop-ins such as Jack Nicholson and Bruce Springsteen

  • Great stories of appearing on The Muppet Show, Wayne's World, and Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show (and one weird night Alice will never forget, spent with Liza Minelli, Linda Lovelace, Chubby Checker, and Elvis!)

  • Alice's life today: still making records, touring worldwide, golfing in celebrity tournaments, and hosting a nightly radio show

  • Amazing stories from the links of playing with Arnold Palmer, Bob Hope, and Vijay Singh, and at places like Pine Valley and a course in Iceland at 2 A.M.

ALICE COOPER, GOLF MONSTER is an unlikely and captivating tale full of wretched excess, life-saving redemption, ghoulish eye makeup, power chords, and five irons to the center of the green.

I think it will be a fascinating read. Mr. Cooper is intelligent, well traveled, successful in a variety of venues, and, as with all addicts, a practitioner of the art of excess in all things. I am always intrigued in the how's of diverting self destructive behavior patterns into less fatal activities in order to become/remain a productive member of society.

I met Alice once backstage (I was actually backstage to interview Ace Frehley for my high school radio station when Frehley's Comet opened up for Alice in the late 80's) and he really is a great guy and very intelligent. For those of you that remember his scene from whichever Wayne's World movie he was in...that is how he really is. He's not a crazy lunatic (though he may have been one before the golf intervened!).

I will definitely get the book.

FWIW, I also hit balls at the range with Glenn Tipton of Judas Priest around the time of the "Defender's Of The Faith" album's tour. He was also a very nice guy. I think I was the only one who recognized who he was (I was around 14 or so at the time.)

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
