ball position w/ Irons

where do you have it for a 7 iron

At my last practice for school...I was pulling my 7 iron and wasn't getting the best contact. One of my coaches suggested I play the ball back further (I usually have it in the middle of my feet). I think it helped some...I got better contact. Only thing was that I wasn't too comfortable with it at first.

So where is your bal position with say...a 7 iron? Thanks

I think it depends on your pivot and preferred ball flight. Typically the low point of your swing is your target side joint of the arm and shoulder. Usually the ball should be behind that, unles your pivot moves the bottom forward. I like my irons to be 4" before my low point.

In iron play, most people I see have the ball too far forward in their stance. For irons (assume fairway lie), I place the ball in the true middle of my stance. Same position for all irons, but I vary the distance from my body. I don't subscribe to this idea that longer irons need to be farther up in the stance and that ball position should get progressively farther back for the short irons.

 

I suggest you have someone watch you and comment on what you perceive as center (or any position, for that matter). It's possible that there is a misperception of where the ball actually is in your stance.

That would mean there is very little pivot.

 

The big key is to find your swing bottom and place the ball 4" behind it.

4"? by the book I see leek... and your right and i agree, the only thing I would add to that would be ball Position should be determined by the type of shot that you want to hit, swingers using horizontal hinging with a forward ball position will hook and hitters using angled hinging with a forward ball position will slice...
