Most likely statistical insignificant. Total of all shots recorded was 7,278. Thats less than 100 full rounds. Now there are four groups so thats 20-25 rounds for each handicap group. So out of bunkers we are talking fairly few actual shots. For the right vs left rough, I am assuming that the hole pictured is the one of the 4 holes they used. (Quick research shows it is a hole at arrowhead, which is where the test was done. http://www.arrowheadcc.com/waterwayHole4.cfm i'm guessing they used holes 3-6) Slight dogleg left, so shots too far would roll into the right. For the short hitters they might aim more right to have an angle on their second shot. I'm also guessing most 0's would rather hit his second into a par 5 out of the right rough than the left bunker that runs the entire length of the fairway. The following hole #5 is a fairly wide fairway according to their comments. The water doesn't look to be significantly in play on the left, but there is no water right off the tee. It also looks the the fairway slopes left to right. I would think the bias on these two driving holes for the scratch golfer would be to the right.

The graphics on the bunker shot don't make sense. The 20's and 30's both point to the same area. I think the 10's and 0's were reversed on the diagram, although one or 2 shots by the 0's may have a bigger effect due to a smaller sample of shots.

 

The pros may have been trying to avoid the bunker/waste area on the left side so they missed right explaining the higher ratio of shots in the right rough.

Yeah, the graphic on the bunkers is messed. looking at the numbers the 20 is the smaller of the two circles. the 30's is the larger of the two.
