What do the hands do through impact?

I've read enough golf theory to get myself completely confused about the swing. I know the hands in theory shouldn't square the clubface, but if all else about the arms, shoulders, and legs are in working order during the swing...how do the hands react?

 

Latest instruction I read has the palm of the left hand facing down at top of the backswing, and then eventually having the left palm face skywards through impact. Does anyone have any good illustrations of the hands through impact? Maybe a visual aid? I keep watching live swings but they happen so fast to understand how the hands look like at and through impact.

Left palm down of the backswing??? To me, that means an extremely flat movement. Not necessarily good advice.

The hands need to know where to go, but should not ADD anything to the swing. If you are pivoting through the ball correctly, the hands will square naturally. But, for instance, you swing way under the swing plane, you will have to use your hands to flip at impact to square the face.

Thanks stuckntx. You're right it is a flat position at the top. Just reading an interpretation of Hogan's swing that has a visual of a waiter holding a tray at the top of the backswing and then visualize slamming the tray to the ground as the arms and hands go along for the ride after the legs initiate the downswing. The resulting move is imagining the right palm wiping the ground, and the left palm facing skyward during the movement.

 

I've always had trobles with the concept of square at impact so just trying to visualize how impact looks if one only focused on the hands.

Lead and accelerate, absolutely, but not by adding with the hands themselves. :tongue:

ICK - way too much to think about. If you want the feeling of what your hands are supposed to do, get a swing glove , I think it's www.swingglove.com or you can get at large golf retailers. I believe in training aids because it keeps the thought process out of the swing. You can use the glove at the range or even on the course and it will help "train" your hands to go through the proper position at impact. Once trained, you won't easily forget it and you won't have to think about it. The glove will keep you from flipping your wrists through impact and help skeep the back of your leading hand (left hand for right handed glofers) headed down your target line as long as possible.

I play my best golf when they are somewhat passive!! and I have recently have been paying more attention to them through impact as I am try'ing to swing left!! I want them to disapear when they hit my left hip pocket!!! (lookin from behind) really trying to swing in to in!! I love it so far on my irons.

 

The more passive they are the firmer I am at impact,... The less tension in my grip pressure.

 

To get this feeling I start hitting balls with just my right hand using a 7i!!! It also has help my transition on the down swing what I have been fighting all yr!! Got this out of a book thats 30 yrs old. It's help get the dip out to (right) shoulder where you need to slap at it with your hands.

There are plenty of videos on youtube of pro golfers that will show you proper hand motion.
