Played Poppy Hills Yesterday 6/23/18

Some friends and I played Poppy Hills yesterday and had fun. The weather was really nice in the high 60's sunny and no wind. The staff at Poppy were really nice but there's a few things that I want to point out to guys playing Poppy in the future. There's a lot of large waste bunkers with rake marks and foot prints all over that you want to avoid. Some of the bunkers are okay but some are hard as rocks which they shouldn't have.There's no rough so a ball can roll through the fairway and end up in the woods or OB. There aren't any water stations anywhere on the course. The greens are big with undulations. It's cart path only so it's better to walk and if you don't have a cart you can rent a Clicgear for $10.

 

After our round we decided to eat at The Tap Room because Duke's Club is eliminating the 20% off food and beverages at the end of June. We all had the prime rib chili with cornbread and then I ordered the Chocolate sundae which is double vanilla bean ice cream, warm buttered banana's, honey almonds, cookie pieces and sticky hot fudge which I forgot to pour over the sundae before I took the picture. The size of the sundae is bigger then it looks, the huge martini glass is approximately 8" from one side to the other side.

 

Later that evening my wife and I enjoyed some wine at Staves Wine Cellar at Spanish Bay and then we tried to get into Peppoli for dinner but they were slammed for the evening and even the Maitre D. that we know couldn't get us in. So we ate next door at Traps bar and had a window table overlooking the ocean. We wanted some pasta which isn't on the Traps menu so we talked to the Maitre D. and he gave us the Peppoli menu so and we had a great meal starting with wine, tomato bread soup, Pappardelle Bolgnese with boar ragu and other things over pasta and we finished the evening off with Tiramisu and expresso.

My sister and brother-in-law have one of their wines served at Staves - Mattina Fiore Albarino. Quite good as are all their wines. Limited production winery.

I played on Sunday 6/24. The course is in very good condition. The weather was overcast with no wind the first nine. Conditions were variable the second nine, but we finished in bright sunshine with a strong breeze. The green speeds did vary, but they are in good shape. The waste areas are tricky and there are a lot of them. Your lie will be variable. There are also clumps of foliage that can trap your ball. I was disappointed that carts were not allowed on the fairways. In retrospect, I should have walked and rented a clicgear, rather than paying the $25 for the half cart. I ended up walking and carrying my bag quite a few times and ended up walking more than 6 miles. While I don't like the redo I will definitely play again soon. It's a great deal with the NCGA discount.
