My favourite hole - I just /cannot/ par it.

The par 5 11th is my favourite hole at Rye Hill. I love the idea of shooting between the hedges to get from the front fairway to the back fairway. I even like the tricky approach with a hedge on the left and two bunkers on the right. But I almost never par it and today was no exception.

 

A great drive, an excellent 3 hybrid and I was 160 yards from the green. Now normally I'd be sensible and lay up but it was a gorgeous day so I thought 'why not?' and went for it with my 5 hybrid. I found out why not. I pushed the shot slightly and the ball flew straight and true into the right hand bunker.

 

From the bunker I could barely see the pin because of the low winter sun. I just swung my 64* SureOut and hoped the ball would come out. It did indeed come out. I didn't see it fly but I did hear a thud then a rattle as it dropped into the hole for a birdie.

 

Like I say, I just cannot par that hole.

Yup. I honestly don't think I've ever birdied that hole before in the ten+ years I've been playing golf. And to do it from a bunker, blinded by the sun. The rest of the round was so-so but I didn't care. Rye was the first proper course I ever played so it's always had a place in my affections :)
