I was reminiscing about my boss at my first "real" company today. I was 24 and he was in his seventies but we played quite a bit of golf. He guarded his clubs more closely than anyone I have ever known, not because there was any value to them, but because he would never be able to replace his Shakespeare shafts. He was a slight man and also a jazz singer so had a real rhythm to his swing. He couldn't drive the ball 200 yards, but if he got into iron distance he was going to beat you (or me to be precise). To my recollection, these shafts were a pale blue in color but I can't find anything like that on the internet, so maybe my memory is off. Anyone know of these? He was a great putter but would only play our home course, I invited him to play a different course and he told me he didn't know how to read greens and he only had the one course memorized. He also had a great story about working at the bank and seeing part of the collateral on his loan to the Cadillac dealer being towed out of town by Titanic Thompson.

I recall a couple sets of Shakespeare clubs that came into my golf shop in the mid 70's that had black fiberglass shafts. They may have come in other colors .... not sure. Shakespeare made fiberglass fishing poles also.

The Shakespeare's had fiberglass shafts, I recall the blue color. Never hit one, though.

 

Do they still make fishing poles? I have an Ugly Stick from the late 1970's.

Yup, Far better known for their fishing equipment than their golf equipment.

I have a Shakespeare putter with a cream colored wonder shaft on eBay right now. Sweet stick!

Gary Player played briefly with these shafts . he had an endorsement contract with them.

Story about Gary was he hated the shafts so had steel shafts painted black when he was endorsing them
