I wonder why Paula got a free drop @ 16th.
Does anybody know why?

They didn't explain on the tv coverage. But, Dottie Pepper had mentioned that her ball looked like it might have embedded into ground, after it landed. On the tv it looked to be impacted into the ground.

 

If it was, I believe she would've been allowed the free drop.

btw, how much does the ball has to be buried in order to declare embedded?

i don't think there is a depth that it is in... as long as it's sitting in it's own pitch mark in a closely mown area you are allowed to lift and drop without penalty...

that's not entirely correct. first, you need to call over your playing partner and get some validation that the ball is embedded. if it hasn't rained in a week, your partner should reject the claim out of hand. if it has, then you might be entitled to relief. mark the ball carefully and slowly pick it up. if you can fell that it isn't embedded, put it back as closely as you can to it's original condition in the grass. it might be sitting down, but not embedded; if so, you don't get relief. if it is, and you can feel that it is when you pull it out, then tell your partner it is embedded, pick it up, clean it (you can clean an embedded ball) and drop the ball from shoulder height within a club length.
