MacGregor MT Tour Forged Irons

Recommended Posts

New member here. Does anybody know anything about these irons? I bought the 2-6 and 8-10 together and the 7 separately. All but the 2 and 7 have matching serial numbers. From the little information I could find, this model was produced from 1980-1982, and the "tour forged" stamping indicates that all of mine were made in 1980, as those produced later reportedly did not have that stamping. Other than that, I can't find much. I would primarily like to know the specs, but would also appreciate any history such as what category these fall into as far as MacGregor lineup, etc. Catalogue pages or any ads would be awesome, as I am having trouble finding anything like that past the mid 1970s.

These are my first set of blades period, but my first set of vintage clubs as well. So, I have no idea where they fall as far as forgiveness or feel compared to other blades, but the hype about less forgiving but great feel is certainly true. That being said, they're tons of fun and they're definitely one of the better golf purchases I've made.

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the world of vintage, be careful it can get addicting!   I own the same set except mine are 81-82.  I can't offer anything as far as specs, other than 80's clubs will have weaker lofts than modern clubs, from the factory the MT 7 iron would have probably been set somewhere around 38 degrees.  There are a lot of Macgregor experts in the forum that may have the exact factory specs.   They would have been considered pro line clubs, so they are definitely a high quality forged club.  Macgregor in the 80's wasn't quite at the same level as Macgregor in the 50's and 60's, but these are still some really nice clubs.

As far as feel and forgiveness, I wouldn't say they are the best blades I have ever used, but I do like them and took them out year for a round this season. I switch between a few different vintage forged blade sets, and I don't keep sets unless I intend to use them, and I haven't sold these, so take that for what it's worth.  The great thing about vintage clubs is you can pickup sets for a fraction of the cost of modern sets, try what you like, and sell what you don't want without spending too much.

If these work for you then keep them and enjoy them!
