3 Swings - Iron, Hybrid, Driver

Recommended Posts

===SWINGS HERE===

I've been working for the last week or so on keeping my hands closer in and then more vertical, instead of rolling my hands over as I go back. I've definitely been hitting it better, but it's introduced some incredibly fat chunks into my game. Would love some comments on if this is the right direction.

My short irons are pretty consistent, my miss with my long (4-6 and hybrid) irons is most strike based - I have a really hard time making solid contact, I usually top or chunk it and not consistently one or the other.

My driver on the other hand is very consistent - a high push-slice that loses me a ton of strikes OOB.

The big thing I notice is my wrists break down almost immediately. I tried keeping my hands lower and swinging more vertical and it definitely made my iron contact better, so that's a possible route to go down.

I actually don't hate the driver swing, but I realized today I actually open the clubface at address (phone died, unfortunately no head on video), which would easily cause those high fades. It didn't immediately show results, but something to keep in mind.

Any comments much appreciated. Thanks!

Agree you need to keep the hands lower, but only in the takeaway. Right now, you immediately lift the clubhead outside the line while simultaneously rolling it wide open with your forearms. Then once you get to about shaft parallel, your arms stop lifting and start going across your body. That's a recipe for slices with that combination of open face and arms stuck behind body, forcing you to steepen in transition.

The opposite needs to happen--keep the face square and hands going straight back in the immediate takeaway (imagine that in the first couple of feet of your backswing, you are trying to keep the clubface pointed at the back of the ball) then once you get to about shaft parallel, start working the club vertically to keep your arms in front of you.

I spent some time at the range yesterday working on a more vertical backswing instead of rolling it over, but unfortunately all I got for my trouble is a ton of really fat shots. I could feel it working sometimes, but I mostly just had a ton of trouble making contact with the ball. My guess is that my ground contact was always poor, it was just hidden by a ridiculously shallow swing. Now that I'm a bit steeper, I'm really getting punished for it.
