Long ago golfer that is getting back into the game

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Long time Cali golfer who took a 20 year hiatus from the sport.  Was a scratch golfer in my teens, went to college on a scholarship, blew out my knee and stopped playing.  I had played so much for so long I needed a break. Didn't realize that it would be a 20 year hiatus.

Bout a month ago my son got me back in the game and I caught the bug again. Was happy to see that I could still hit the ball. Pulled out my TopFlight Lee Trevino with original grips clubs and couldn't hit them all that well yet. Found out that those clubs are apparently very rare and not many sets were made.

Decided to go get a new set of something and was beyond blown away at how far tech has come and how crazy the fitting process is. I have spent the last two weeks building myself a new set of gear, see my sig, and am hoping that I don't have too many regrets with my choices.

Still figuring out my swing and still waiting for a couple clubs to come in that are ordered but so far am pretty happy with my choices. The only partial regret so far is the irons.  Got setup with the T150s then went to a PXG fitting on a whim and was pretty blown away by the 317 CB's. Loved the feel and the look, not so traditional.

Gone down like 10000 rabbit holes with all the gear and am second guessing all the the things all the time but this forum has helped so much and has provided me with so many answers.

Looking forward to joining this community and to get back down to a single digit soon.

Wulf

Welcome. This place has a tendency to get you spending on golf.... LOL So lookout! 😄

I bought the 317 STs myself, and I definitely also like the CBs (the ST set uses a 3-4i CB). So far I really like them. As I got back into golf last December/January, I knew I was gambling by buying them this early in my return (having only started playing real rounds in late June after finally getting a job LOL ). Yet, I was pleasantly surprised at the transition.

Like any equipment change so drastic, though, I've got another few rounds before I expect to fully acclimate so I can get back on track with improvement overall.

Anyways; welcome again.

I am interested and hearing your opinion in a couple months after you've been able to sit on those clubs.

I can't stop thinking that I made the wrong choice even though I didn't make the wrong choice going with the new t-series irons. From an old school golfer but like different looking stuff.

I feel like I'll definitely have a good read on them by then. I already like the feedback and how they feel on flushed shots. It's too up and down right now since I'm acclimating to multiple changes, but the first practice session before my latest round was gold. It gave me a good feel for where I think I'll be this time next year.

That said, I don't think you made the wrong choice with the T150s, either. That's a nice set of irons.

thats a real nice setup that I could see fit the eye of an old school golfer, lots of classic shapes/profiles.  everything i've heard about the t150s have been positive, def give those a chance (the previous generation of t100 were also really highly regarded and these are supposed to be an improvement)

  • 2 weeks later...

I took roughly a 20 year break also, playing a handful of times in those two decades. I was never a scratch golfer though, not even close. I got back into the game in the middle of last year and I am having the time of my life with this impossible game. I had to get used to a big head driver, other than that, and how the balls have changed, equipment is similar. Some rules changes, that was weird. Electronic yardage devices, cool. Especially useful is swing recordings on my phone. I use OnForm, it’s useful.
If I had any advice it would be try to not buy more than 5 putters!
