Austin Public Courses

Hi guys,

 

Will be visiting Austin, March 9th - 12th.

For people who live there, how are the course conditions right now?

What public courses would you recommend playing? Budget is around 150ish a course.

For munis, Roy Kizer or Morris Williams. Haven’t played either though in about a month though so I don’t know the condition and we’ve gotten a lot of rain. 
 

They’re not technically in Austin, but Kissing Tree down in San Marcos or Star Ranch in Hutto are my two favorite public courses. 
 

I would recommend to stay away from Falconhead, Avery Ranch, and Tera Vista. They’re all owned by the same group, overpriced, and incredibly slow paced.

Public golf absolutely blows there… I’m assuming they are staying downtown? 

 

Lions Municipal - (save muni) is very very close to downtown. The course is just okay. It’s fun and I love it. Quirky, cheap, close to downtown. Crenshaw grew up on the course. 

Riverside golf course - if they are golf nerds this is the spot. It’s $20ish public and a dump, but it was designed by Perry Maxwell on some of the best land around austin for golf. It’s cool to see what 50 years of neglect will do to a golden age golf course. This course was the 2nd austin country club and was abandoned for the Pete dye on the lake that hosted the WGC Match Play

 

Falconhead - high end public 30 min away, not that great… tpc originally but they quit paying for that name. Its prob $150+ and a 5-6hr round 

 

Avery Ranch - kinda the same as falconhead, this place was in the news recently for the high school team being there when the strip club was having an event.

 

Wolfdancer/Hyatt Lost Pines - 20min past the airport, so not too far. Best public course in the area. I don’t think a hotel stay is required.  I used to be a member here. They are the only course in the area that doesn’t overseed so it should be firm fast brown Bermuda

Butler pitch and putt - It’s downtown. 9 hole par 3 course. No rules, great vibe, will have a band/tons of beers. Just requires a ball, sw and putter. I used to play a game here every Monday that was a ton of pga/champions/kf players and it was a 2man blind draw scramble. It’s just such a fun vibe. You’ve prob seen it on social media, they do a golf event there every year with pros and celebs sponsored by Tito’s
