New to golf, what do you think?

Recommended Posts

I played less than 10 rounds 12 years when I first bought a set of Acuity clubs on sale from dicks. I played my first round in 12 years last August of 2023. From August until now I played less than 20 rounds and about double that in range trips. YouTube and this website taught me everything I know about a golf swing so I’m here to ask for any tips that will help me get more consistent and better accuracy. I tend to fade the ball or slice it bad unless I make ground first contact (which has become less frequent but still happens entirely to much). here are my distance

driver : 240 - 259 carry

3 wood : 215yards

4 hybrid 205 yards

5i : 190 yards

6i : 180 yards

7 : 170 yards

8 : 160 yards

9 : 150 yards

pw : 140 yards

52° 115 yards

56° : 95 - 100 yards

Its not bad. I see that you are pretty over-rotated in the backswing, which puts weight on your lead side too early. In the downswing you start steepening the shaft and turning too early, prompting a slight over the top swing. You do a pretty good job of getting back on plane, but you would benefit from less rotation in the backswing and dropping the hands more in the downswing.

Best drills you can start with are half backswings or L to L drills.

Thank you. I don’t understand the over rotation. A few weeks ago I learned “back to target longer” in some videos and I have been trying to do that. Sometimes I feel like my lead knee bends a lot in my backswing, could the over rotation make me feel that? It makes me feel really low and then I kind of stand up right before impact and it looks like I flip my hands a lot of the time. Recently I have been trying to point the butt of the club at the ball for longer and the first time I made solid contact I hit my 7 iron almost 180 yards. Which blew my mind because it felt like the club didn’t even hit the ball. Just felt like a practice swing.

Yes. The lead knee bend is what you feel with an overrotation.

If you look at your right leg its very straight at the top of the backswing. Also at the top you have most of your upper body over your left leg. This is called overrotating. I think its largely from pulling the arms behind you with your arms as you turn back. If you worked on just half swings using your shoulder turn, that will give you the feel of how far you need to go in the backswing. Think of a full backswing as a sped up half swing, or pitch shot. That should give you an idea.

You basically get so far off balance with the backswing that the only thing to do is throw the club OTT.

If you could, set the camera up more straight behind you. Get a face on video as well. That way we can make more precise analyses. At the moment. I would just have you work on a shorter backswing. The L to L drill is good or get one of the Tour Striker balls. The ball forces you to keep the arms in front of the chest and to rotate less in the backswing, essentially giving you the half swing in the L to L drill. I always start my range sessions with short wedges shots and then work my way up the bag. That way my driver swing doesn't get too far away from my wedge swing I worked on earlier in the session.

Hope that helps.
