Shorter iron lengths

I’m 5’6” and have pretty short arms, and I was looking at getting irons and wedges at 1/2 an inch shorter and driver and woods at least an inch or an inch shorter than standard. Would love to hear from anyone who plays shorter length irons/is a bit shorter than average. Also curious if any tour players use shorter length irons - I thought Brian Harman or Alejandro Tosti might.

I play irons 0.5” short. Am 5’9”. Have played woods shorter, as well (44” driver). Here are 2 things to be mindful of…

 

First, hit your irons with impact tape or foot spray, and let impact be the judge of length. If you’re consistently striking the ball higher on the iron face/consistently hitting it fat, a shorter length could definitely help strike location. If this is the case, try gripping down and making your normal swing and see if strike location moves. If you start striking it lower on the face, you have your answer. Either way, it would be helpful to have the feedback/know for sure before you make changes. 

 

Second, if you go shorter, it’s likely to have an impact on swing weight. I like a heavier feel in my clubs, and taking off length also lowers effective swing weight. I often find myself adding a not insignificant amount of weight back to the heads of my irons to get that feel back.
