Drills to shorten swing

Recommended Posts

I am going to be going trough some major swing changes this season due to the fact that i don't believe i can improve much more with the swing i currently have. I am a 7 handicap with a really long backswing. When i say it is long i mean it goes back farther then daly's by quite a bit. I am looking for some drills or practice aids that will help me in shortening my swing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is the long backswing because you are very flexible? Or is it a result of the shaft/forearm angle going past 90 degrees? If it's the latter, I keep this in check by only allowing the wrists to hinge as a function of the bending on the right elbow...not as a result of being loosey goosey in the wrists. Basically, the feeling is as if the wrists don't hinge at all. Of course, they will hinge, but only because the right elbow is bending while the left arm remains straight. Hope this is of some help.

Shorten up the tumb on your left hand it will give you more stability at the top for one. Then I would try to work on widening your backswing now I am guessing but you may be be breaking down with the left arm in the backswing which make you go pass parallel. Take the club and grip it in your left hand, take your right hand and grab the inside of your left wrist, take the club to the top and pull with your right hand this should feel very extended and much wider than what you are used to. Try it if you could put up a video we could do better but these are a few tips.

hey guys thanks for the advice i have actualy tryed the 3/4 swing thought but it still ends up being well past parallel. the main problem with the swing going so far back is that i am very flexible but i also have the problem of breaking down the wrist sometimes so i will deffinatly try to keep it from doing that. Keep the advice coming guys it is much appreciated

hahaha - do u touch your ankle?

But everyone's giving sound advice - flexibility is a good thing, and perhaps its just the fact that you will always swing past parallel because of very flexible wrists - it happens. Just need to keep good angles with the rest of your swing and turn to stop it from going overboard :)

I don’t use it much anymore, but the Swingdye has helped me from going past parallel in the past. It’s fairly inexpensive. A few things I like about it are that you can manipulate it on the handle so that it forces you to make a shallow or steeper swing plane. You can also use it for any club in your bag, including the putter. You can get them at most Big Block Golf Stores...Good luck…

Basically, when the shoulders stop turning, the arms stop...however I would agree with the above post...the swinggyde will help.

This is more often than not down to a synchronisation issue where the arm swing does not match the pivot........there are two drills that I would try.....1) get yourself a beach ball and blow it up but leaving a fair bit of air out of it so it is semi flat you then hold this between your arms and your chest and hit balls with it, this will synch up your pivot and your armswing and therefore make the swing shorter..GRET DRILL FOR SYNCH........2) If no1 does not work I have a club made with a piece of elastic tubing used by physios attatched to the end I then place this through your left hip belt loop and hit balls with it as you will have to swing it shorter with this it makes your arms and body move together and you can feel the left side of the body being stretched out..this shortens the swing and also gives a great feeling for the downswing. :cheesy:

Hope these help. :)

Cheers Dan

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
