Toeing, skying and few more newbie questions

Hi all,

Long time reader, first time poster. These forums are great to get tips and comments. Something about myself, I have been playing for almost 1/2 year, about once a fortnight. I'm a 120 - 130 strokes (that's including penalties etc) per round guy so I dont think I'm qualified for a handicap yet. BTW, is that a good score for a beginner?

My equipment: A set of hand-me down clubs from my relatives. 2-sw bladed irons, wooden driver and fairway woods and a fairly used putter.

I am taking lessons from a pro. At the lessons / driving range I could hit my driver pretty straight, roughly 200yd? (the pro told me I would hit further when I have developed the proper technique). I am not sure about my swing speed but I assume it is pretty low. I could hit my 5iron roughly 150yd if striked perfectly.

But whenever I'm at the course I can't hit the driver / long irons properly. They were either toeing, skying or topping, you name it. If I do hit a decent one, it would be a major slice. My question is how does one bring the lessons / range hitting technique onto the course?

My goals for this year are:

To strike the ball consistently

Average 110 strokes or better per round

Thanks for reading :clapping:

Practice, is all I can say. At this point your swings are probably like snow flakes, ie no two alike........so giving advice is a bit hit and miss....pun intended!

If I'm reading your post right, you're playing old blades and persimmons woods........a trip to used rack at your favorite pro shop for some this century equipement would help and be not that expensive.

Keep hacking it up man and have some fun!

Agree with the above, you wanna get some forgiving irons and driver would definatly help, but just practice alot and those lessons really help. Just think of what have learnt at the range and take it to the course, dont put pressure on ur self. Have fun and enjoy yourself!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for your replies. Yup you are right, I am playing with the old style blades and persimmons woods. Would that be part of the reason why I am not striking the ball consistently? Will definitely be getting a set of modern equipment soon :clapping:

What are some cheap and forgiving golf clubs? Please recommend thanks.

I agree with the practice part and hence I'll be going to the range regularly from now on.

I really enjoy playing golf even though I cant hit the ball consistently. Always love a challenging sports, it is also a good place to network and mingle.

Your clubs are definatly not helping, thay's for sure. Don't expect a miracle with the newer stuff but it will help. Like I said, look on the used rack (you can also get great deals of leftover inventory, brand new clubs from past years, just as good as this years models, weather we like to admit it or not.......). Any modern cavity back (also called game improvement irons) and a 460cc titanium driver will do. The difference in performance between brands is practicaly non existant. Buy what you can afford and looks good to YOU. If you stick to major manufacturers, it's all good stuff.

Save the money for range balls and lessons. When you start breaking 100 regularly MAYBE then you can start looking into getting fitted clubs. Maybe.

Always keep in mind, it's not the arrow, it's the indian.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
