Divot Help

Recommended Posts

whats happening?
Ok, I can't figure this one out. My divot this year so far is one of a slicer (outside in) But I'm a drawer of the ball or hit it dead strait( no hook or pull). I am a good ball striker and carry a low handicap. This year I went from my ping Isi irons to the new Adams Pro's . I've adjusted my lie and am hitting them in the sweet spot just about every time. Today I played a very good round, but seemed to be getting a much bigger divot but the shape of my divot is off! Any ideas?

The 1st inch of your divot is all that counts if that is on line to the target then this is correct as the rest of the divot should be curved off to the left as this is the way that the club enters the hitting area square and then eixts to the left.....the type of divot I have described goes hand in hand with a very good strong release of the club when the club follows the body the club will exit left hence the shape of the divot I have described.

Place 2 tees in your divot at the front and lie them flat on the ground have a look at where they are aiming andthis will tell you how your club has entered the hitting area.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Dan

If you are right handed and swing on an arc, your divot should point left of the target.

I agree with Dan that the initial 1 - 2 inches are most indicative of the target line, but I'd go even further and say that they might still point left of the target, generally, and you would have a fine path. Flat swings will have slightly more visible arc in the divot also. Consider this: the radius of the arc of a rotary golf swing is about 5 - 6 feet. An ellipse with this radius is roughly parallel to the target for only 5 inches (2.5 inches on either side of the ball) at the bottom of the arc. Outside 2 inches of the bottom of the arc, the club will be "off the target line." Because you only see the part of the arc after impact, you perceive it to be a "cut" action, but you are likely delivering the club from the inside to square and then back to the inside on the follow through.

As a side note, I've seen it many times where someone looks at the "tee marks" on the bottom of their drivers to attempt to assess swing path. The above confusion applies in this case, but there is also a compounding factor of a "closing" clubface through impact that will make tee lines on drivers misleading to a lot of folks. The "inverse" of the above principles apply. If your tee line is dead square, you probably are not hitting it very straight that day.

Cheers,

Tim

I agree both of you could be correct if he has a release left swing.

For me at the impact area I am looking for full extension and at least for the length of my divots they are pretty straight

Also even if he swings left or releases left it would depend on how severe left the divots are to determine and alighnment problem

I still say he needs someone qualified to check his alighnment if thats good then I would not worry about the divots.

Wow you guys are good.... I do line up slightly to the right, or that it appears. I pull my right foot back a touch to assure me that I come back into the ball from the inside. That's where I get my right to left Draw. I am very glad to here that I might not be causing myself a bigger problem. Thank You all!
