Iron Shaft Flex

I know in recent years there are more and more options in iron flex and less and less uniformity. I know it's ideal to get custom fit, but I think you before spending that kind of money I need to be informed. I've got a few questions I'm sure you guys out there can help with.

 

1. How can someone tell if their current shaft flexes are too stiff or too flexible?

 

2. As someone who's trying to improve, and getting stronger, is it better to go ahead and get stiffer shafts? I'm sure ideally you could get refitted after significant swing speed gains but that's just not always financially feasible.

 

3. What's the deal with some shafts like the ones used in Callaway Big Bertha's that are uniflex? Hows that work?

 

4. If you are going by swing speed and are stuck inbetween stiff and flexible, whats the better one to go with?

These kinds of questions are ones that a good clubfitter would help you with. And don't think that because you're swing speed with your driver is one thing that it's the same for your irons. Mine is pretty different (check out the flex on my irons and woods), but if you ask a clubfitter they'll tell you--after all, these are the kinds of things they get paid to know.

The Callaway uniflex shaft is a great concept and seems to work well for those who are in between flexes and for those with smooth tempo's. The concept as we see it is that the flex point floats thru the stepped portion of the shaft and will bend higher when it is loaded more, and lower when it is loaded softer giving it a multi flex characteristic.

 

The general rule for this situation would likely be stiffer is better on "in between" golfers particulary those who are developing their games proactively, as it will promote more control (both height and directional) in a game that is defined by control.
