An open letter to Scotty Cameron

This is a stock Ping PLD mallet cover. It comes with a $450 milled putter. It’s well made, has nice embroidery, a single flap cover, soft interior, and a magnet closure. It fits so many other putters well that I actively seek these out and keep a stash. 
 

 

This is, well, something different. It is the stock cover for 2024 Scotty mallets. They are also $450 milled putters. It’s well made. Has nice embroidery, some weird double flap BS, and garbage interior with low end Velcro that inevitably fails in a fairly short amount of time. It’s also enormous, even on the Phantom 9. Putting it on a Phantom 5 is silly because A. It’s YUGE, and B. Nobody who is not getting paid to do it is fighting that double Velcro closure mess.  Interestingly enough, the PLD cover above fits neatly on almost every 2024 Scotty mallet. 

 

 

 

 

 

I don’t pretend to know Ping or SC’s margins. But I know that the likely end goal of both of these is to produce a cover that lasts as long as possible, as cheaply as possible, that showcases the company name. In this, Scotty is failing. I’ve never met anyone who prefers Velcro to magnets. They exist, just like people who believe in ghosts, but I’ve never met them.
 

Assuming margins are similar, why doesn’t SC switch to something that people will actually use on their mass produced lines? it keeps their name out there as long as possible? Sorry, I didn’t sleep last night.

I love the design of the rareish SC headcovers... but agree on the quality.  I keep mine on a shelf and use two 12.99 Amazon china junkers on my Scotties.  I recently checked out a PLD Anser 2 and the white headcover with all the little emblems on it was absolutely perfect.

at this point they're too far into it with velcro's on all of them that they probably wouldn't switch. As an SC fan boy - i'd welcome it with open arms but knowing how the brand does things, they won't.

I guess it never occurred to Scotty to copy the PING putter shapes AND their head covers. 😂

Cannot agree more. Love the Ping putter covers. Some of them are also really well padded.  No way I'd use a velcro headcover unless absolutely necessary.

I love Scottys, but completely agree. His headcovers are poor and the lack of pitchmark repairer now I also dislike.

Scotty has stated he likes the sound/feel of velcro so that's on his covers. 

 

Also Scotty if he was to read this....

Bettinardi finally switched, there is a chance. I think they will and they can sell limited edition head covers with huge markup. That is what I imagine they will do.

I think it's because Scotty makes so much money on the limited run/"special edition" headcovers. If the stock covers were really nice, nobody would shell out a couple hundred bucks for the aftermarket ones. The Scotty cover is just decent enough that people will use them for the name brand appeal, but not nice or "coveted" enough to dissuade people from wanting to collect the ones everyone sees as rare and sought after

I have the smaller PLD head cover from 2021, I use it on my Scotty GOLO 6 and it fits perfectly. I recommend finding one of those. Except they are white. Yuck!

Odyssey mallet covers are also pretty nice. I hate velcro.

Admittedly the Scotty Blade putter cover Velcro really doesn't bother me.  BUT..... The mallet headcovers are comically bad. It's such a poor design.

I don't know anything about Scotty Cameron headcovers, but that design for the mallet is terrible. I like my Odyssey one, it's magnetic so I can stick it to a club and not worry about it.

Yes, we exist.  I just bought a new Odyssey Ai ONE Jailbird Mini putter. I didn't like the head cover with a magnet, so I grabbed an old head cover out of the closet with velcro. All is now good. And I also believe in ghosts...

As long as they use strong enough magnets they work

I did a DIY project and it was way cheaper, and also I could check the magnet strength

I've done it for mallets and blade covers

I do love it

Only issue is my carbon putters stick to it sliding in lol

The velcro on my putter head cover has held up nicely for over 8 years, as if it were still new. Can't say the same for my knee brace.

I do have to say, the older covers velcro seems to hold up way longer than the newer ones

And there are known covers with bad velcro. Hula 2010 for one

The only reason to put Velcro on a putter cover is because you literally don't give a damn about the golfer who is actually going to be using it. Velcro on a putter cover is a thing that should not even exist. 

 

The real mystery is who even thought that was a good idea in the first place. And the second question is, can someone please track him down and give him a good, square kick in the rear for me.

Magnets in putter head covers are the curse of mankind. Better just to go with a sock or Snedeker style... forget the head cover.
