Using the Golden Ratio When Building Clubs

I’m new to club making and I was weighing some components and clubs and noticed that the best feeling clubs (completely subjective) are very close in proportions to the golden ratio Phi 1.6 (Phi is this special mathematical ratio that occurs in proportions of the human body, Plants, DNA, solar system, art and architecture, Music)

 

 

For example:

 

Club head = 200 grams

 

shaft and grip = 125 grams

 

total weight = 325 grams

 

 

The club head to total weight ratio = 1.6, which is the same as shaft and grip ratio to club head ratio = 1.6.

 

 

Is this by design and is this something you should adhere to when building clubs or is this just a coincidence??

Coincidence.

 

Driver head weight has not changed more than a few grams in 50 years, while shaft weight has gone from 130g to as low as 45g.

Golden ratio.... Hmmm?

 

Sounds good at first, but I think you might want to weigh some more components. Wedge heads, putter heads, hybrids, and then weigh the shafts and grips. I doubt the best feeling combinations continue to fit this ratio.

Do not try to "spreadsheet", especially if looking at custom clubmaking.

 

Yes one can make 36in then 38in waist pants for the mass market if they are not custom making pants.
