I fully agree that a 4* gap between clubs is ideal. However, is a 46* PW, 50* Gap, and 54* versatile enough without a 4th wedge?

After reading all of these responses I think it is apparent that IF you carry 4 wedges a 46*, 50*, 54*, and 58* is the best setup for most situations and coursed.

HOWEVER, if you can (or will) only carry 3 wedges a 46*, 52*, and 58* sounds like the most versatile mixure as long as the bonce characteristics match your course conditions and swing type (steep or shallow...). Six degrees of difference should'nt make too huge of a difference, right*

So since I already have a 52*, 56*, and 60* maybe I should trade in the 56 for a 50, the 60 for a 54 spin milled, and just buy a new 58* spin milled (since it will be in the bag with either set-up) to be covered for a 3 or 4 wedge set up (46, 52, and 58 OR 46, 50, 54, and 58). Then I would have a 46*PW, 50*, 52*, 54*, and 58* right?

I think that settles it then for me, THANKS TO EVERYONE! Now off to ho some wedges!

This isn't Russia.

Is this Russia? This isn't Russia, is it?

I didn't think so. No, the thing is, do you want to carry a 46* PW?

Just because your set's specs say it is a 46* wedge, does not mean that's what's in your bag. Manufacturing tolerances can vary, but a degree or two isn't unheard of (even with forged Titleists). Two points:

1.) Even if it is 46*, that doesn't mean you have to keep it that way. You can bend it to 48* if you'd like, you can bend the rest of your clubs +/- a degree or two. Now, because the geometry of the sole/face is fixed, if you adjust the loft, the bounce will also change. But a degree or two of bounce is negligible (at least to me).

2.) Even if it used to be 46*, it might not be now. I find hitting off mats in the winter de-lofts my irons, especially the clubs I hit most frequently. It's no wonder I can hit my 'favorite' clubs a little longer: my 8 iron, over time, had become a 7.5 iron.

For me, the key is managing my yardage gaps between clubs. I like to keep it around 10-15 yards. This usually corresponds to a 4*-5* difference in loft and a 0.5" difference in length. The goal is to identify the distance range you'd like to cover and then tweak your set to fill that range.

I agree with the last poster. Just bend your new 46* PW to 47*. If you are comfortable with the wedges you have why go buy ones with different lofts when you can basically bend 1 club and fix your problem. So you would have 5* difference instead of 4* between 9-GW and keep your current SW. Do you think have ing a club 1* stronger will affect your club choice that much? How many yards do you gain from 1* of loft, maybe 2-3 yds. tops. Just another viewpoint if you don't see the neeed for 4 wedges.

I have 46-51-54-58.

The 46 is the PW and the 51 is the AW from the Fusions iron set. I carry 4-AW, which is essentially the same as traditional 3-PW. I use the 51 AW from the Fusion set more than any other club around the greens. The 54 (Callaway Forged) is for touch shots inside 90 yards and most greenside bunker shots. The 58 (Vokey Oil Can) is for full-swing shots in the 80-yard range, greenside chop/flop shots and shots from deep greenside bunkers.

I was playing 46-52-58, but I missed having a wide-sole cavity-back club for 100-115 yard shots. We all need a little forgiveness, right?

Great thread!
