Well, why don't you get a lesson from each of them and see what you like better? That'd be the best way to find out. If you go with the non-pro, make sure you have a consistent rate set up so that way you're not just guessing what he wants. I took lessons from a guy who told me to pay him whatever I thought I should. It's not good tryin to guess what somebody wants you to pay them, so just set up a price and stick with it.

I took lessons from a +1 handicap and he was a terrible teacher, he just told me to adjust the plane of my swing when I had a problem with my ball flight, Flatter if I had a fade and upright if I was hooking it, now I take lessons from a PGA certified teaching pro and I learned more in the first lesson than a year with the +1. If you remember watching "Tee it up With Tiger" you might remember seeing AK trying to give a lesson he was abosoultley terrible at trying to teach, you would be better taking lessons from a small time range pro rather than AK who is one of the best golfers in the world. I think the old adage "Those that can - DO, those that cannot - TEACH" works here.

Some of the best players can not teach because it comes naturally to them and they can not teach you their ability. Look at some of the best coaches in professional sports were not all-stars but middle of the road players that used their heads to stay ahead.

I would call up several local teaching pro's and see if they offer group lesson's for your ability. This way you can get a few more lessons in not as intimidating situation, if you like then try individual lessons.

The old adage mentioned in a previous post is true.. As an instructor and college coach I'd recommend purchasing "Practical Golf" by John Jacobs as a good reference book.. Then find out how each individual teaches. Does either use video, if so, do they have a system they teach within or a method they expect you to execute. Does each respect the importance of proper fundamentals..i.e. a sound grip, proper alignment and an athletic posture. For a high school golfer/future collegiate, good golf instruction is serious business and shouldn't be taken lightly. Good luck in your pursuit..

you can search it on pga.com

I have to disagree with some people that just because the person is a PGA pro, they're a good teacher. There's an LPGA pro near me who has won a lot of awards and is ranked pretty well nationally. 90% of high school players in the area(honestly the best players in the area for the most part) refuse to take lessons from her because they think she's terrible. I take lessons from a guy who's not a pga pro, but he's been doin this for year and is one hell of a player. It varies from person to person. I don't think you can say that just because someone is a pga pro, they're a good teacher or if someone is a scratch golfer, they're not as good.
