r7 460 Production Review

Finally stopped by my dealer who has had several boxes of the r7 460 Taylor Made drivers in since early this week. They can't sell them until April 1. 9.5 and 10.5---8.5 will be available May-July time frame. These heads looked much better at address than some of the reps. demos. They are still closed looking at address but not as much as the demos. were. Don't know if they tweeked the face a little or these two I tried were just better looking than most. I should have looked at a whole bunch of them. Not nearly as loud as the demos either. More of a Taylor Made sound not a Cobra sound. I would say the two drivers I tried were roughly about 10 yards behind the X-460 and Hi Bore (my new standards). But those were both 8.5s and had shafts in them that I liked. I still am not impressed with the REAX shaft series (or the ROMBAX for that matter). I am almost tempted to buy an 8.5 when they come out and reshaft it with an NV or the like. Very high trajectory with what I would judge to be medium spin---it didn't jump and stop like the 905R does. Still wanted to hug the left side of the fairway (no matter what you do with the weights). I stuck a 14 gr. in the toe, removed the heal weight, and put one strip of lead tape on the toe and still couldn't fade the ball---wanted that left side of the fairway. The shape isn't as good as the X-460 shape but certainly is better looking than the Cobra speed series drivers. I think people that are looking for a new 460 in a Taylor Made and like this shaft are going to be pretty pleased with the retail version. It is an improvement over protos I tried and even some old demos as well. I still think there is more to this head with a different shaft but that's another day.

I like the r5 TP better--looks and feel. Squarer face and seems to perform a little better probably because of the shaft which I thought was pretty darn good.

How do you think it compares to the 425?

 

I like the shape of the 425 better. I wish they could have just enlarged the 425 but this has a slightly different shape.
