New Callaway ball deemed illegal at the U.S. Amateur

I was on the first tee of U.S. Mid Am qualifying Tuesday morning and I show my playing partner what ball that I am playing. It was a Callaway ixtour. He looks at his caddy and says, "hmmm, that is interesting." I was wondering what that was all about and he said that the USGA deemed the "new" Callaway ball were illegal. I asked about the ball and my playing partner said that the ball had two dots on the ball right next to the ixtour logo on the side of the ball.

 

Does anyone know anything about this? And what this ball is all about?

the previous callaway i ball with a one dot sidestamp was dropped from the list of conforming balls because some of the one dot balls that were manufactured exceeded the weight limit of 1.62 oz.

the new balls that were to replace that ball is the one with a two dot sidestamp. so as far as i know, the two dot ball is conforming

The Tour IX ball was never in question and the conforming Tour IX ball has either NO dots or Two on each side. So, if your ball had no dots you are fine.

Does anyone out there know where I can buy the version of the Callaway Tour IX ball that has the two dots? Ex: <**tour ix**> The reason I'm looking for this version of the Tour IX compared to the <tour ix> (no dots), is that according to the USGA the two-dot version yields a HIGH spin rating on the irons. So, the current Tour IX has L-M classification, which means low-spin with the driver and medium spin with irons. But, who doesn't want the best of both worlds? I want the version with the two-dots as I think the slight cover change has allowed for more spin around the greens.

I've went around to all the stores in my area - i can only find the version of the Tour IX that does not include the two dots inside of the alignment arrows.

In case you are wondering, the Pro V1 and Pro V1x both have M-H spin classfication, which means "Medium" spin off the driver, with "High" spin off the irons. This is horrible! No wonder I don't hit these balls as far off the driver as the Callaway Tour IX.

There is no ** IX ** ball made. Only the I ball has an ** I ** model.

rehberg do you prefer the Callaway Tour IX ball over the Pro V1x? What do you like better about the ball? Worse?

I've recently switched from the Pro V1x and i seem to hit it better, but i'm not 100% sold.

I have always been a Prov1X guy, but I started using the IX and was really impressed. I have been consistantly using it for over 6 months now and it gives me a little more distance off the tee. Its not a ton more distance, but non the less more. Honostly they are just about equal in every other way though. So I stick with the IX. Ill switch back every now and then and the same thing happens, a little less distance. The proV1x just spins a little more off the driver than the IXs.
