Proper degree between clubs

What is the proper configuration?
Confused about "proper" degrees between clubs. Seems I'm out of whack with the 4* separation that I've read I'm suppost to have. Please advise * I should have. Thanks.

Here is my current set-up.

Driver = 10.5*

3 Wood = 15*

Hybrid = 17*

Hybrid = 20*

Irons = 5-9

Wedges = 46, 50, 56, 60

It is really up to you and the course you are playing. Some courses I play I carry a 19* 5 wood and a 19* hybrid and take out a my 52* wedge because I am never in the yardage on the course, Other courses I take out a 3 iron and add a wedge or two, but you have an old standard and a new standard. look at the difference between the lofts on the nike blades and then the lofts on the cleveland cg2. It really all boils down to which clubs you need for you on your course. Thats how the pros do it. They know that on hole # 3 for exp: it is a good drive left center of the short stuff then a 9 iron in. But maybe the loft of their 9 iron is 44* and they know the 1st day the pin is 2-3 yards farther back than what they hit it. So they will simply bend their club one degree strong for that hole given they do not have to use it on any other shot during the round. I hope that helped some. It all about playing the course, not the course playing you. Think stratigically and actually plan a round of golf. You will see dramatic improvement in your game

Very interesting insight, playing the course, not the course playing you.

Never thought of logically setting up the clubs in your bag to play the course.

A great tip I will keep in mind to set up my bag. Thanks.

Your progression does not seem that off. I am assuming your hybrid 17* is shorter than say a 4W so it's playing like a 5W at 19*?

It looks like you have a gap between the 20* hybrid which is essentially a 3 iron and your 5 iron. In other words, you gave up a 4 iron for the gap wedge. Nothing wrong with that so long as you understand what you have done and have what would be the 4i distance covered by choking up a little in the hybrid 20*.

The other alternative is to get a hybrid 22 or 23* and shelf the hybrid 20*.

There is no correct answer here, what's important is do you have all your distances covered and what is the benefit of the extra wedge? Only you can answer that.

Doesn't matter what the gap is. What does matter is how far you hit each club consistently. And that you have the typical yardages covered. I believe most good players work with about a 10 yard gap. If that's 3* or 4* it doesn't really matter. The only real "distance" club you have is the driver.

Similar to what was said in some posts above.

Thanks for the replies. Went to the range today.

I've found that I get SOOOO much distance with the Tour Edge 15*, that I need the Nickent 17* to keep pace.

(Was going to take the 17* out of the bag and do to the standard "keep 4* between each club" theory popular in traditional schools of thought).

I found the 15* and my 17* have a good 10-15 yard gap.

Now for the gap between the 20* FW and my 5 iron.

Took the suggestion of Demolition Man and just choked down on my 20* FW to find a nice 10 yard gap with the 5 iron.

Learn something new on te GOLFWRX site everyday!!!!

Setup will remain:

R7 460 driver - 10.5*

TourEdge Exotic - 15*

Nickent 3DX - 17*

Nickent 3DX - 20*

MP-60 - 5-9 irons

CG10 - 46, 50, 56, 60 wedges

Thanks for the advice all.

      Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
