how I added 20 grams of tungston to my ping anser

Please feel free to let me know what you think. I know it's kind of ugly, but the putter feels great.



Does anybody know anything I can do to hide the rough cosmetics? maybe gun blue the putter, paint or powder coating?



1. picture before i started

2. I removed the shaft

3. I measured and marked the best places to put the weight, you will notice the toe of the club the weight is just a touch closer to the face

4. You need to have a cobalt drill and plenty of lubricant to drill stainless. I use some scrap polyethylene as cribbing (jig)
5.you will notice the vice is bolted to the frame, to drill stainless you need a good hold on things

6. Finished product, and the tungsten slugs ready to install
7. The tungston is covered in shafting epoxy and tapped into place and PC7'ed to the head

8.The shaft has been re-installed and is drying

Hey, very cool. How much was the net gain in weight?

 

Powdercoating can be done certainly. Stainless won't hold the gunblue.

Dyno, wow, I am flattered that is a really nice compliment coming from someone of your knowlage. The total weight gain was was 14 (and change) grams. I know that sounds weird, I thought the satinless that I cut out would be much heavier than that.

 

 

 

Also, when I first started this, I taped the weights to the bottom of the club to see where I wanted to put the weight, why do you think it is that the putter putted the straightest with the toe weight a little closer to the face? is this the hosel that caused this?

Nickc, I am sure you could do this too, and I am sure your dad is proud of you for something. I am not a club maker, I have no formal training, this is just something I thought I would tinker with this for fun, so my point is that anybody with a drill press can do this if they want too.

 

 

 

Golfmar, I did a lot of checking, and me adding weight the way i did is legal, however, the holes in the hosel I am not sure about. Ping did those, and then recently the USGA has a picture on their website that says the holes in the hosel are "non plain non conforming".

Very nicely done Scotte! :crazy:

 

If you want to smooth out the sole a little, try sanding it. First remove any high spots with a file. Then start out with 120 grit and work your way finer. You may lose a gram at the most, and it should blend together nicely.

Thats awesome! I have been tinkering around with some of my clubs recently, mostly building some new ones. But I think I am going to step it up a notch and start drillin' and cuttin'. :crazy:

I would recommend sanding the sole with emory cloth ( in a uniform direction) and then using a scotchbrite wheel to put a little texture to it. It would look a lot like a Slighter ported putter.
